What is GSMP? • The global forum for users to bring business needs that require standard based solutions to create a more efficient Supply Chain. • Provides a comprehensive set of methods and rules allowing both the GSMP and EPC communities to submit their business needs that lead to the creation of globally agreed standards and guidelines.

Structure of the GSMP Governance groups consist of the following bodies: • GS1 Management Board: Determines the global strategy for GS1, and ratifies changes to new or existing GS1 System standards • GS1 Board Committee for Standards (BCS): Provides operational and strategic policy and guidance in support of the GSMP GS1 Management Board Board Committee for Standards (BCS) Architecture Group Process Oversight Committee Central Operations (GS1 Staff) Technical Standards Committee

Structure of the GSMP The Governance Support groups consist of the following bodies: • Architecture Group: Promotes and protects the technical integrity of the GS1 system • Process Oversight Committee (POC): Ensures that the GSMP is delivering standards that are critical to business needs with world-class efficiency • Technical Standards Committee (TSC): Subcommittee of the POC, ensures that GSMP is delivering technical standards that address business community requirements • Central Operations: Ensures day-to-day project management and resource allocation within the GSMP GS1 Management Board Board Committee for Standards (BCS) Architecture Group Process Oversight Committee Central Operations (GS1 Staff) Technical Standards Committee

10. What is the Structure? Working Groups fall under one of the following types: • Standards Maintenance Groups (SMG): Standing working groups composed of business process and GS1 standards experts • Mission-Specific Working Groups (MSWG): Formed to work on Complex Change Requests or GSMP initiatives - are closed upon completion of the solution.

11. How to Participate in the GSMP Process

Participating in a Standards Development Team • Organised and led by a GSMP Process Manager • Virtual meetings are teleconferences which range from weekly to monthly • Virtual meetings may also include web meetings or video conferencing • Physical meetings occur twice a year • Ad hoc physical meetings may be scheduled

13. GS1 Intellectual Property Policy GS1 strives to protect its community of users and their efforts and investments. GS1 Standards Development: • Delivers Global Interoperable Standards • Developed through working Groups • Operating under the safe haven ofthe GS1 Intellectual Property Policy Framework

Why do we need an IP Policy? • To protect the GS1 Community and its investment in development and implementation • Many patents exist and are being filed today in areas relevant to requirements, process, and specifications • Companies could hold patents on aspects of the process that may later deter implementation • GS1 IP policy encourages Working Group participants to identify a necessary claim of their Intellectual Property

15. How do we address it within GSMP? • All companies and MOs must sign the IP Policy • To have access to work-in-progress and affect development, all companies and MOs must Sign the opt-in Agreement • GS1 requires all participants to operate under the same agreement

30. Work Requests and Work Orders • Work Requests (WR) are submitted by the community to request new standards or modify existing standards • WRs becomes Work Orders (WO) when work is initiated in GSMP Step 1 (Requirements).

GSMP Voting • All GSMP members are eligible to vote • The participation requirements and voting minimums for a specific GSMP Working Group are defined in the Working Group Charter • Process-mandated voice motions: • Moves work from step to step • Subject to participation minimums - if not met, use group virtual motion instead • Community eBallot: • Progresses draft requirements and standard forward

GSMP Voting GSMP minimums take the following form: • A minimum of 12 organizations must participate. • In addition, a minimum balance (“2-2-2”) of: • 2 MOs • 2 End Users from one side of the trading relationship • 2 End Users from the other side of the trading relationship If a particular work effort requires unique minimums, they will be defined in in the Working Group Charter

33. How will current GSMP work transition into the New GSMP?

GSMP Work Transition for Maintenance Changes Simple (Maintenance) Work Requests submitted into the current GSMP will continue to be processed in the current GSMP model by the Business Requirements Groups (BRGs) until the analogous Standards Maintenance Group (SMG) in the new model achieves a critical mass of GS1 IP Policy signatories. GSMP BRG - existing Work-in-Progress New GSMP 19-April 2010 The institution of the GS1 IP Policy in the new process will play a key role in determining WHEN any group is considered operational. Each SMG must have an Opted-In membership of sufficient size to represent a valid minimum of the community voice in the creation of the standard. The determination of what is a “valid minimum” will be made by the Process Oversight Committee (POC).

Things that are the Same • Standards development follows same 3-phase process as in EPC SDP: • Industry group identifies business need (no IP) • Requirements developed by cross-industry group with biz and tech participation (under IP) • Standards developed by cross-industry group (under IP) • Development of industry requirements and standards will continue under IP Policy and process with goal to produce user driven royalty free standards • GS1 IP Policy nearly identical to the former EPCglobal IP Policy • All development activities are defined within a Charter - clearly delineates scope • Standards published post-ratification, freely available to general public • The GS1 Architecture Group (merge of EPC ARC and old GSMP AG) provides overall architecture oversight and responds to requests for findings

Things that are Better • Clearly defined process uses group of EPC standards experts to manage the maintenance of EPC standards for simple [incremental] modifications • Exposure to the full breadth of GS1 Standards development to promote collaboration, ensure alignment and prevent divergence • More groups in which to participate to develop and effect changes to all GS1 standards • Solution providers have full participation and voting rights in all GSMP working groups • Community review of requirements and standards extends to all GSMP members, not just within working group • New process step to lay emphasis on developing collateral materials in support of standards adoption

The normal minimums are established in the GSMP manual, but can be overridden in a given group’s Charter if approvedby the POC
