“A Teacher is Like a Candle” By: Christopher Hanna
Part of the reason that I am choosing to become a teacher is because I view teaching as a community service; it is a very honorable job because it involves helping others. • A candle lights up the darkness until it runs out of wax. The light provided by the candle helps others see. Just like a candle, a teacher gives of himself/herself for the benefit of others. A teacher lights the way for his/her students. How This Metaphor Connects with the Teacher I Would Like to Be
The students are the people that are being helped by the candle. They are made visible by the candle. • Other teachers could also be helped by the candle. They can view the candle (the teacher) as the ideal way to teach. Expanding this Metaphor
Candles are very simple,or “black and white” objects. Teaching, on the other hand, is very complex. A candle might be too simple of a thing to compare to teaching. Where does my metaphor break down? How is it different from teaching?
