Counseling Practicum and Internship Orientation to the IUPUI C/CE Program
Practicum--G524 • 100 hours on site • 40 hours of direct client contact • At least 10 hours of the 40 must be group work • 60 hours of relevant on-site work
Practicum • Practicum is in a school • In some cases, may be in an agency • Class is offered spring, fall, an summer terms • Summer term is from early June to end of first week in August
Practicum Class and Supervision • Class meets weekly • General class structure: • Three hour class • 90 minute group session • 1 hour of individual or dyadic/triadic supervision with instructor or designee • Individual supervision may occur at various times during week, various formats (e.g., telephone, face-face) • Instructor has flexibility in the agenda and supervision methods
Practicum Class and Supervision • Class session and individual supervision includes the following: • Review of student activities • Review of taped sessions • Review of progress notes/other documents • Review of logs (instructor discretion) • Other learning activities designated by instructor
On-Site Activities • Direct Services: • Individual and group counseling • Consultation • Assessment
On-Site Activities • Other activities • Scheduling • Academic advising • Program delivery • Attending learning activities • About anything work-related can count
On-Site Supervision • 90 minutes with supervisor • Can be in one or multiple sessions • Site supervisors must be licensed in their fields • Supervisor should • review notes • Review tapes • May co-counsel early in experience
The Log • Use CCE log to record direct and indirect service hours • Keep weekly and running tally • At end of semester: • Have supervisor sign • Deliver to practicum instructor
Periodic evaluations • Midterm and near end of semester • Students receive evaluation forms in class • Take to on-site supervisor and return to instructor ASAP
To apply for practicum • Forms on line and beside doors of Professors Robison and Morran • You’ll need to obtain professional liability insurance (more on next slide) • Complete and return with completed program outline and resume to: • Kelly Dunn
Professional Liability Insurance • Must have a student policy covering student counselors • Teacher’s insurance may be acceptable if it covers counseling • Various companies offer this insurance
Professional Liability Insurance • Some good ones: • ACA, ASCA (membership required) • Marsh Professional (professional membership encouraged) • Cost is about 35.00
Next Practicum deadline • September 15, 2008 • Deadlines typically are in: • September for the spring term • February for the summer/fall terms
Internship -- G550 • Internship may follow successful completion of practicum • 600 hours on site over two academic terms • Internship offered spring and fall terms, not summer
Distribution of Internship Hours • 540 at primary specialization • 30 at each of the secondary specializations • Work activities should be balanced across the various counseling tasks (recommend at least 240 hours direct service)
Transfer of Practicum Hours to internship • Students may transfer up to 100 hours over and above those needed for practicum if: • Practicum passed with B or better • The first semester of internship occurs in the next available semester after practicum is completed • The hours were supervised on site • The hours are truly not needed for G524 • The faculty field experience director approves a formal request to transfer the hours
Hours Per Semester of Internship • All interns must: • Complete at least two semesters of internship (students can take up to 4 semesters of internship) • Complete at least 100 hours per internship semester unless authorized to do otherwise
Internship Supervision • Weekly internship class • At least one hour weekly with internship supervisor, at one time or over the week • No taping required in internship • Interns continue to maintain the weekly log • Interns have first semester, and final written evaluations -same procedures
Internship • Practicum and internship sites may be the same site Site supervisors must be licensed in their fields
