  1. Weather Instruments By Jake, Will, and Harris

  2. Barometer • The barometer is an instrument for measuring the pressure of the atmosphere. It works as the hands on the center of the instrument move to indicate the barometric pressure. It was invented in 1643 by an Italian scientist named Evangelisto Torricelli.

  3. Thermometer • Thermometers are used to measure temperature. • A mercury thermometer has a tube of mercury that responds to heat and cold. As the temperature increases, the mercury rises in the tube.

  4. Radar • Radar was invented in World War II to detect enemy planes. • It works by sending beams of energy out to storms at a high frequency. When it detects rain or wind, it sends some of the waves back.

  5. Wind Vane • Wind vanes measure wind direction. • Winds get their names from the direction they are blowing. • It works because the wind blows the wind vane and causes it to spin, showing the direction of the wind. • They don’t always measure gentle wind direction. • They are typically placed on top of homes and buildings.

  6. Rain Gauge • This instrument has been used for more than 100 years. It measures the amount of rainfall. It is made of a large cylinder, funnel, smaller tube and float. The rain is measured inside the rain gauge..

  7. Satellites • They can show us where clouds located and they can measure the temperature of the ground, water and clouds. The GOES satellite is a satellite that travels 35,000 kilometers above the earth. The satellite orbits the earth so it always stays over the same spot.

  8. Weather Map • The weather map shows the temperature of the air. It is also used to show a picture of weather conditions. It is used to display information quickly, and people can get immediate information.

  9. Wind Sock • A wind sock is a cone shaped flag that indicates wind direction and relative wind speed. It flies in the direction of the wind. This enables the meteorologists to quickly tell the wind direction.

  10. Anemometer • The anemometer is a device that indicates how fast the wind is traveling. It is an effective model wind speed indicator. It works by cylinders catching the wind and the device rotating.

  11. Psychrometer • The psychrometer is an instrument that measures relative humidity in the air. It has two thermometers strapped by a handle attached to a board. One thermometer has a wick, and it is dipped in water. Then the instrument whirls and the water evaporates. Meteorologists compare the two temperatures. • A chart is used to report relative humidity.
