  2. Thermometer • A thermometer is a device that is used to measures temperature. • Two important elements of a thermometer arethe mercury and the scale. • Two different types of thermometers are primary and secondary thermometers.

  3. Barometer • It is used to measure atmospheric pressure. • It can be used to find high and low pressure. • The lower the pressure is for a region, the more chance of rain. • The higher the pressure for a region, the less chance of rain.

  4. Weather Vane • It is used to show direction of wind. • They are put on highest points of buildings. • It can be used as architectural ornament. • All sides must be same weight. • The spinner on the Vane moves freely.

  5. Weather Map • A weather map is a tool used to display information about the weather. • They have been around science the 1950’s. • It has been used for research and forecasting purposes. • The weather map usually shows high and low pressure, fronts, temperatures, and precipitation.

  6. Weather Balloon • It is also know as a sounding balloon. • It carries weather instruments to high altitudes. • It sends back information on pressure in the atmosphere. • Weather balloons are usually filled with hydrogen.

  7. Windsock • It is a textile tube designed to indicate wind direction. • They are typically used at airports. • Wind direction is the opposite of the direction in which the windsock is pointing. • At many airports, windsocks are lighted at night by flood lights.

  8. Conclusion • Meteorologists use the data from thermometers, weather vanes, rain gauges, barometers and wind socks. These instruments help meteorologists forecast the weather. Weather maps illustrate the data from instruments used by meteorologist.
