Definition of E-university • E-university is translation of key relationships and services, as well as academic, outreach and business processes through the use of Internet technologies [1] [1] Edgar, P.Mc.Questen. E-university: transforming process and culture, - the University of Texas at Austin, March, 2000

  4. Aims of E-university initiative • To improve, diversify and extend university's services, • To be more effective and efficient and, • To be more attractive and competitive in a local and global marketplace

Current E-learning activities • Development and use of e-courses • Mostly web supported and blended-learning e-courses • E-courses which are developed under University's intellectual property policy are centrally evaluated • Seminars to discuss and disseminate new practices of e-learning at University • Annual competition of the best e-courses at University

Next Steps – Evaluation of OpenSource E-learning Tools • University of Latvia is using WebCT CE 4.1, it is necessary to upgrade to newer LMS • Possible choices are commercial or OpenSource LMS • Currently E-university project is seriously evaluating Moodle • Some of the OpenSource LMS benefits are: • Greater flexibility of implementation • Greater flexibility of use • Robust functionality • Reduced costs

External Students at University of Latvia • New possibilities for everyone to participate in the lifelong learning process • Attendance of separate study courses at university and confirmation about study results • Broad study course offer: Social, Natural Science, Humanities, Engineering; Full – time and Part -time studies, E-courses • Advising and registration in the Student Services at University of Latvia

Career Center I Meeting point for stakeholders: students, employers and education institutions Benefits for enterprises:recruitment (job interviews, CV data base, Career Fair); information about education sector, employees’ development Benefits for University:providing internship places for students, information about industry and required competences for graduates’ employability; information for academics and administrative personnel about labour market

Career Center II Benefits for students: support in the transition process: school – university – labour market; information about occupations and its connections with education; student motivation etc. Method: Internet-based services and materials for public: • General information • CV data base • Tools for self-assessment and Career Guidance (psychological tests, E-portfolio system etc.)

  16. Summary After 5 years of launching of E-university project, e-learning has become an essential part of University. More than 200 lecturers are involved and more than 7000 students use e-learning every year in more than 400 e-courses It is possible to see the list of available e-courses easily, guest access for many e-courses is also available University of Latvia supports external students to easily offer courses (and e-courses) to everyone To further improve University services, Career Development center has been established as an interface between enterprises and University to formulate needs, gather feedback
