  1. Vocabulary for Algebra 1 second semester

  2. Semester Plan You need one to two pieces of paper out. Place your name at the top of the paper and title according the listing below of the day. • Tuesday : Chapter 8 Exponents #1-12 • Wednesday: Chapter 9 Polynomials #1-10 • Thursday: Chapter 9 Polynomials #11-20 • Friday: Chapter 10 Quadratic #1-9

  3. Chapter 9 • Monomial • Degree of a monomial • Polynomial • Terms • Degree of a polynomial • Coefficient • Leading Coefficient • Binomial • Trinomial • Coincide • FOIL Method • Zero-Product Property • Roots • Vertical Motion Model • Zero of a function • Greatest Common Factor • Factorization • Perfect Square Trinomial • Factor by Grouping • Factor Completely

  4. Monomial • Is a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables with whole number exponents. • Ex: 3, 5x, 6x2 , 5x6y8z2

  5. Degree of a monomial • Is the sum of the exponents of the variables in the monomial. • Ex:

  6. Polynomial • Is a monomial or a sum of monomials • Ex: 3w + 4x + 5y + 7z

  7. Terms • Are the monomials in a polynomial that are separated by either a plus or minus sign. • Ex: for the polynomial 5x + 3y – 8z the terms are 5x, 3y, -8z

  8. Degree of the polynomial • Is the greatest degree of its terms. • Ex: for the polynomial 5x4 + 3y3 – 8z the degree of the polynomial is 4

  9. Coefficient • The number part of a term with a variable part. • Ex: the coefficient of -6x is 6

  10. Leading Coefficient • When a polynomial is written so that the exponents of a variable decrease from left to right, the coefficient of the first term is the leading coefficient • Ex: 2x3 + x2 – 5x + 12 the leading coefficient is 2

  11. Binomial • A polynomial with two terms • Ex: 2x2+ 12

  12. Trinomial • A polynomial with three terms • Ex: 2x3 + x2 + 12

  13. Coincide • An equation that when simplified the expressions are identical.

  14. Turn in to the teacher • Please staple if necessary.
