Activity • What is “social networking”? • Social networking • Term coined in the 1950s by sociologist J. A. Barnes. It described interactions around shared interests between people in the “real” world (groups of approx. 100-150 people) • Social networking services allow people to transfer those interactions to an electronic form
History of Social Networking • Ahead of their time • Classmates.com (1995) • Sixdegrees.com (1997) • Both sites could not find a market and were not profitable • Friendster.com (2002) • Suffered from technical problems • Social Networking Sites gain steam • MySpace.com (2003) – Continuous steady growth • Facebook.com (2004) – Expanded in 05 with huge growth in 06-07
Differences and Usage • MySpace • Began as a site marketed to independent musicians • Many more options for personalizing • Can be confusing to read or create • Facebook • Originally for college students • Now open to anyone • Cleaner space
Differences and Usage • Myspace • Targeted to a much larger target group and therefore was more open to many visitors. • You are prompted for more information in your profile. • Very customizable, you can manipulate it to your liking • Demographics • Facebook • Facebook was a private community for Harvard students and was set up with more privacy. • Information is limited in your profile • History tracker that helps show visitors and the owner of the page what has happened new. • Demographics
