About the Washington Semester Program • VT SPIA Washington Semester is an 11-week summer program. • Students may choose from two program options: • 6-credit internship only • 12-credit internship and course/seminar • This program is open to students across ALL majors
Washington Semester Program Options There are two program options for students to choose from: • 6-Credit Program: Internship, professional development, evening lectures and selected field trips. • 12-Credit Program: Internship, Friday class and seminar, professional development, evening lectures and all field trips.
Washington Semester 12-Credit Program Policy Class (3 credits) • The class focus is on policymaking and governance in a democracy. Classes are held each Friday, 9am-12pm. Seminar (3 credits) • A three-hour session each Friday from 1-4pm featuring field study at public, private and non-profit organizations demonstrating their roles in policymaking and governance. Internship (6 credits) • A 30-hour a week internship (Monday – Thursday) with a public, private or nonprofit organization in the National Capital Region (NCR). Professional Development • Tuesday or Thursday evening sessions with experts in key industries and Career Development sessions on resume building, interviewing and networking.
WS 6-Credit Program Internship (6 credits) • A 30-hour a week internship (Monday – Thursday) with a public, private or nonprofit organization in the National Capital Region (NCR). Field Study • Students will participate in selected field studies.

Parking Options for Parking at SPIA Alexandria • Private LOT - located on South Henry Street (Route 1 South). • Street parking - free street parking in two-hour time blocks on the streets adjacent to the building. Gallery residents may be able to obtain a paid permit to park on the street for more than 2 hours at a time, available from the City of Alexandria. • LIMITED Parking at the Gallery for Gallery residents for a fee (check with VT Residence Life).

WS Ambassadors • Provide recommendations to SPIA faculty and staff about effective strategies for increasing awareness about the WS program; • Highlight experience as a WS alum at info sessions with other Virginia Tech students considering participating in the program; and, • Serve as a “buddy” to new WS students by providing them with information or general assistance that they may require. Provides an opportunity for WS alums to represent the WS program among their peers and mentor new students who join the 2017 program.
