What is Burnout? • Feeling empty • Devoid of motivation • Beyond caring • Burnout vs. Stress • People experiencing burnout often don’t see any hope of positive change in their situations • While you’re usually aware of being under a lot of stress, you don’t always notice burnout when it happens
Causes • Personal • Excessive Schedule • High Drive • Organizational • Poorly-defined or Conflicting Roles • Dealing with Unclear Expectations • General Work Overload

Leadership Persona • Personality and character attributes that generate respect for leaders: • Compassion, concern, skill • Decisiveness, determination, accomplishment • Charisma, intelligence • Vision, consistency, and appearance
Signs of Burnout in Leaders • Lack of follow through • Poor quality results • Absenteeism • Low morale and satisfaction • Lack of energy and enthusiasm • Low self-esteem, depression • Personal dysfunction • Physical illness
Burnout Solutions Prevention and Recovery
Recognize and Acknowledge • Burnout can and does happen often… • But with proper planning, you can prevent burnout from taking over!
Prevention • Start the day with a relaxing ritual • Adopt healthy eating, exercising, and sleeping habits • Set boundaries • Don’t overextend yourself • Take a daily break from technology • Nourish your creative side • Creativity is a powerful antidote to burnout • Learn how to manage stress
Already Burnt Out? • Delegate tasks to others • Evaluate goals of participation • Rotate positions to something new • Take a “sabbatical” • Members will gain respect for: • Why tasks are delegated • How execution of task affects the group • Deeper respect towards structure As a leader, let your groups know you care!
Burnout is… • exhaustion of physical or emotional strength usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration
