Dealing with Opposition to LeadershipNehemiah 4 -6 We are all leaders in one area or another. • Every husband is a leader by life, role, and example. • Every wife is a leader by life, role and example. • Every parent is a leader. • Every grandparent is a leader. • Every student is a leader. • Every employer and employee is a leader. • Every Christian is a leader, leading by example, by influence, by lifestyle, and by any other possible way that we can represent God.
Leaders have followers • Nehemiah provides us with a model of Godly leadership. • Godly Leaders Pray • Godly Leaders are Servants • Godly Leaders Care • Godly leaders model Godly Character • Godly Leaders are Realists, and also Visionaries
Godly Leaders have Plans; they know where they are asking others to come with them. • Godly Leaders Communicate and Connect • Godly Leaders show Wisdom and Good Judgement • Godly Leaders Build on the Past While They Always Focus on the Future • Godly Leaders Make Mistakes and Confess to their Failings
1. GodlyLeadership Initiatives Invite Opposition • Opposition generally comes from two directions; external and internal. • Mockery 4:1-3 External • Aggression 4:7,8 External • Opportunists 5:1-12 Internal • Distractions 6:1-4 External • Slander and Lies 6:5-9 External
2. Opposition Can Intimidate Godly Leaders • It can make us feel Overwhelmed 4:10 • It can make us feel Afraid 4:11-14 • 3. Opposition Can Motivate Godly Leaders • It Promotes Faith 4:9, 14, 20 • It Promotes Vigilance 4:13, 16-23 • It Promotes Accomplishment 4:6; 6:15-16
How do you handle opposition? • Do you ignore it hoping it will go away? • Are you overcome with opposition and paralysed to act on it? • Do you try to avoid opposition by working around it? • Do you amplify the problem until no amount of leadership can solve it? (Why make the problem difficult if with a little more effort you can make it impossible?) • Do you face the opposition and problem confronting you from God’s perspective and trust Him to lead you through it?
James 1:2-8 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials (opposition)of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial (opposition) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
