  1. Brain Power Mind, Memory and Focus By Dr. Kimberly Balas

  2. The adult brain weighs about 3 lbs - about 2% of body weight • It uses 25% of the body’s oxygen and as much as 20% of the blood’s sugar (about 400 calories per day) • The brain is 70% water • About 50% of the “dry” weight of the brain is fat - 35% of that is omega-3 fats • Contains billions of nerve cells - 98% of the nerve cells in the body

  3. Five Brain Systems

  7. Dopamine Regulates sexual arousal and muscle movement. Dietary Preferences: Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, B3, B6, C, copper and iron

  8. Dopamine • Tyrosine, an amino acid, is the precursor molecule • Associated with movement, attention, and learning • Plays roles in behavior, cognition, motivation, reward, sleep, mood, attention, sexuality and pleasure • Dopamine may also be involved in restless legs syndrome.

  9. Parkinson’s Disease • Caused by the degeneration of neurons which serve to connect the brain's motor system • Characterized by tremors, rigidity of the limbs, poor balance, and difficulty in initiating movements • Stimulating the production of dopamine alleviates symptoms

  10. Schizophrenia • Involves hallucinations, delusions, and the disruption of normal, logical thought processes • Drugs which block activity of dopamine-related neurons reduce symptoms • Possible cause is overactivity of dopamine neurons

  11. Mania • Characterized by excessive production of dopamine • Results in a person feeling “super human” and feeling like they can do anything

  12. Substances that Affect Dopamine • Inhibit • Anti-schizophrenic Drugs • Enhance • Phenylalanine • Tyrosine • Magnesium • Vitamin B6 • Fava Beans and Ox-Eye Beans • Iodine Eating red meat helps stabilize dopamine in O blood types

  13. Supplements for Prefrontal Cortex • Super Omega 3 • Zambroza (antioxidant) • Ginkgo Slow Release • Gotu Kola • Green Tea Extract • Milk Thistle • Mineral Chi Tonic • Focus Attention • Chlorophyll

  14. Slow Release Ginkgo • Improves cerebral blood flow and oxygenation • Enhances brain function (helps absent-mindedness, confusion, lack of concentration and memory loss) • Improves brain alpha-wave activity • Stabilizes Alzheimer’s and dementia patients for 6-8 months

  15. Gotu Kola • Memory and brain tonic • Used in India for longevity, enhancing memory and intelligence and counteracting aging • Enhances learning ability • Reduces fatigue and depression • Also promotes healing of skin conditions

  16. Anterior Cingulate Gyrus(the gear shifter) Functions: • Cognitive flexibility • Cooperation • Being able to go from idea to idea • Seeing options • Going with the flow Issues: • Stuck on negative thoughts & behaviors • Worries • Holds grudges • Obsessive/compulsive • Oppositional/argumentative • Intense dislike for change

  17. Typical Diagnosis OCD Eating Disorders Chronic Pain Oppositional Defiant Disorder Tourette’s Syndrome Addictions PTSD

  18. Help Balancing • Intense Aerobic Exercise • Relationship counseling • Anger Management • Lower protein and higher complex carb diet

  19. Serotonin • Regulates sleep, pain, depression, mood and appetite. • Dietary Preferences: Tryptophan, B3 and B6

  20. Serotonin • Role in regulating of mood • Regulates appetite • Controls of sleep and arousal • Helps control pain • Created from the amino acid tryptophan which is converted to 5-HTP

  21. Supplements for Anterior Cingulate Gyrus • HTP Power • St. John’s Wort • Super Omega 3 • Zambroza • Mineral Chi Tonic • Digestive Enzymes • AD-C • Ginkgo Slow Release • Vitamin B12 • Probiotics • Carbohydrate meals

  22. HTP Power • Enhances serotonin levels • May be helpful for • Improving sleep • Lifting mood • Reducing carbohydrate cravings Ingredients: • 5-Hydroxytryptophan • Eleuthero root • Ashwaganda • Suma • Vitamin B6 • Zinc

  23. Deep Limbic System(mood & bonding) Functions: • Mood control • Flight or fight response • Motivation • Sets emotional tone • Appetite/sleep cycles • Sense of smell • Libido Imbalances: • Depression/sadness • Focused on negative • Irritability • Low energy/motivation • Blame, guilt • Low self-esteem • Isolation

  24. Typical Diagnosis Depression Pain syndromes Cyclic mood disorders

  25. Help Balancing • Biofeedback • Intense aerobic exercise • Following the Zone diet • Cognitive-behavioral therapies to deal with automatic negative thoughts (ANTS)

  26. Supplements for Deep Limbic System DL pheylalanine, SAMe, l-Tyrosine • Focus Attention • Ginkgo Slow Release • Gotu Kola • FCS II • Mineral Chi Tonic • Chlorophyll • Licorice

  27. Focus Attention • Designed to help with ADHD/ADD • Promotes greater mental focus • Calms overactive brain function • Anti-epileptic • Helps clear cloudy thinking and mental confusion • Ingredients: • Slippery elm • l-glutamine • DMAE • Lemon balm • Grape seed extract • Ginkgo

  28. Basal Ganglia(anxiety center) Functions: • Integrates feeling, thoughts and movement • Sets the idle switch • Smooth movement • Modulates motivation • Mediates pleasure Imbalances: • Anxiety/panic • Hypervigilance • Tremors • Muscle tension • Conflict avoidance • Bites nails or picks skin • Fear of being judged by others

  29. Typical Diagnosis Anxiety disorders Workaholic Movement disorders Physical stress symptoms (headaches, stomach aches)

  30. Help Balancing • Body biofeedback • Cognitive therapy to offset bad thoughts • Hypnosis, meditation • Relaxation training • Relaxing music • Limit caffeine/alcohol

  31. GABA • Promotes concentration and prevents anxiety. • Dietary Preferences: Glutamine, B6

  32. GABA • Direct inhibitory affect on brain and nerves • Reduces anxiety • Promotes sleep • Aids muscle relaxation • Reduces seizure activity • Low levels found in epilepsy, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and tics

  33. Epilepsy Some research suggests that epilepsy is caused by an abnormality in the biochemistry of GABA-secreting neurons

  34. Supplements for Basal Ganglia • Valerian Root • HVP • Eight Combination • Zambroza (antioxidant) • Magnesium Complex • Pantothenic Acid

  35. HVP • A relaxing nervine • Quells nervousness and irritability, either through depression or stimulation of the central nervous system • Helps with insomnia • Calm nervous disorders • Corrects muscle spasms and tremors • Lowers high blood pressure

  36. Temporal Lobes(memory and mood stability) Functions: • Understand/use language • Auditory learning • Retrieval of words • Long term memory • Reading • Rhythm, music • Visual learning Imbalances: • Memory issues • Auditory/visual processing problems • Mood instability • Headaches • Dark, hopeless thoughts • Aggression towards self and others

  37. Typical Diagnosis Head injury Anxiety Amnesia Dissociation Temporal epilepsy Serious depression with dark or suicidal thoughts

  38. Alzheimer’s Disease • Caused by the degeneration of neurons that produce acetylcholine • High levels of aluminum have been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients • Caused by oxidative damage to the brain • Difficult to treat once it has started because a large part of the brain is already destroyed, so prevention is best

  39. Help Balancing • Biofeedback • Relationship counseling • Anger management • Music therapy Increased protein diet • Physical/Mental exercises

  40. Supplements for Temporal Lobes Calming, nervines • Stress Formula • HVP • Eight Combination • AD-C • Magnesium Complex • Ginkgo Slow Release • Super Omega 3

  41. Secrets to Not Losing Your Mind

  42. 5 Keys to Combating Age-Related Cognitive Decline

  43. Control oxidative stress (free radical damage) and chronic inflammation • Maintain healthy circulation to the brain • Keep blood sugar regulated • Avoid environmental toxins that damage the brain • Feed your brain both physically and mentally

  44. Control Oxidative Stress& Chronic Inflammation • Brain is 70% water • A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger • Fuzzy short-term memory • Trouble with basic math • Difficulty focusing on a computer • Difficulty focusing on a printed page • Inflammatory Response

  45. Control Oxidative Stress& Chronic Inflammation • Eat 5-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily • Supplements • Zambroza • Super ORAC (Super Trio) • Green Tea Extract • GreenZone Powder • Super Omega 3 • IF-C

  46. Maintain Healthy Circulation to the Brain • Deep breathing stimulates brain activity • Exercise dramatically increases blood flow to the brain (clears your head) • Use supplements to enhance the oxygen-carrying capacity of your blood, if necessary

  47. Caffeine • Chocolate bar = about 25 mg • Soda = about 40 mg • Cup of coffee = about 175 mg Scans of a brain after consumption of 400 mg of caffeine are the same as the brain scans of a fully diagnosed schizophrenic

  48. Maintain Healthy Circulation to the Brain • Stay physically active • Aerobic Exercise • Yoga • Supplements • MC • Ginkgo Slow Release • Gotu Kola • Cardio Assurance • Liquid Chlorophyll

  49. Keep Blood Sugar Regulated • Brain function relies on sugar for fuel • The brain takes up sugar without the need for insulin, so the amount of sugar reaching the brain depends on the level of sugar in the blood • The pancreas maintains a stable blood sugar level for stable brain function • Hypo and hyperglycemia upset brain function

  50. Symptoms of Low Blood Sugar • Cold nose or limbs • Sudden shakiness • Mental confusion • Irritability • Bedwetting in children • Cravings for sugar
