CARBOHYDRATES • Provides energy • Produces glucose • Important for physical activities • Saves glycogen in liver • 2 Types: • Simple (sugars) • Complex (starches) • Examples of food: • grains, fruits, alcohols, treats, etc…
FATS • Builds nerve tissue and hormones • Burns energy • Stored in fat cells • Produces bad cholesterol • 2 Types: • saturated (bad) • unsaturated (good) • Examples of food: • oils, butter, meats, nuts, etc…
PROTEINS • Builds, maintains, replaces tissues • Build cardiac muscle • Made up of amino acids • Body made mostly of protein • 2 Types: • Antibodies (fights germs) • Enzymes (speed up chemical reaction) • Examples of food: • dairy products, legumes, nuts, beef, etc…
FIBRE • Helps prevent cancers, heart disease, etc… • Helps keep you fuller for longer • Comes from plant sources • 2 Types: • Soluble (reduce cholesterol) • Insoluble (keeps bowels healthy) • Examples of food: • Grain products, fruits, vegetables, etc…
VITAMINS • Helps grow and develop • Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble • Water soluble don’t get stored as much • 2 Types: • Fat soluble • Water soluble • Examples of food: • Dairy products, grains, fruits, vegetables, etc…
MINERALS • Help grow, develop, stay healthy • Builds strong bones, transmits nerve impulses • Make hormones, maintain a normal heartbeat • Cannot be produced by living organisms • Body needs more macro than trace • 2 Types: • Macro • Trace • Examples of food: • Dairy, seafood, nuts, beans, etc…
WATER • Keeps metabolism running • Removes dangerous toxins inhaled • Carries oxygen and nutrients to cells • Naturally occurring water isn't 100% pure • Water is disinfected to kill harmful bacteria • Regulates your body temperature • There’s only 1 type of drinking water: • 100% pure water
