  2. Birth date: February 26, 1802 • Death date: May 22, 1885 Hugo's father was an officer in Napoleon's army. His parents spilt up and he was raised by his mother. Victor-Marie Hugo was born in Besancon. The son of Joseph-Léopold-Sigisbert Hugo and Sophie Trébuchet.

  3. In early adolescence he would write verse tragedies and poetry. In the 1830s Hugo published several volumes of lyric poetry.

  4. He had five children, but only one survived , and she spent most of her life in hospitals for the mentally ill. Léopold: 16 July 1823-10 October 1823 Léopoldine: 28 August 1824-4 September 1843 Charles: 4 November 1826-13 March 1871 François-Victor : 28 October 1828-26 December 1873 Adèle Hugo: 24 August 1830-21 April 1915.

  5. Victor Hugo fell in love. He became secretly engaged to his childhood friend Adèle Foucher, against his mother's wishes. • He married Adèle in 1822, after his mother's death in 1821. Their first child, Léopold, died in infancy.

  6. Hugo's oldest and favorite daughter, Léopoldine, died at age 19 in 1843, shortly after her marriage to Charles Vacquerie. She drowned in the Seine at Villequier, pulled down by her heavy skirts, when a boat overturned.

  7. He was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist. Hugo is considered one of the most well-known French Romantic writers. He is know for his famous writing such as: The Hunchback of Notre-Dame Han d'Islande Bug-Jargal

  8. Hugo turned his attention more to public and political issues, becoming a Peer of France in 1845. Tragedy also struck during this period when, in September 1843, his daughter Léopoldine and her husband were drowned in the Seine at Villequier in Normandy.

  9. During the 1830s Hugo concentrated on the theatre, with mixed success. He had difficulties in his relationship with his wife, Adèle, he began an affair with Juliette Drouet, whom he met as an actress in one of his plays. This relationship was to last more than fifty years.
