Extended Response Practice Springboard 1.21
The Strategy • Assertion • Example • Commentary
The Question • List the five attributes that are required to be “receiver of memory”. Identify at least three of these attributes that Jonas possesses using textual evidence from the novel to support your analysis. Be sure to analyze how each attribute will contribute to Jonas’s success as the “receiver”.
Trade and Grade • Underline the assertion – be sure that it clearly states the writer’s opinion regarding the three attributes (traits) that Jonas Possesses. • Put a check mark next to each piece of textual evidence from the novel that supports the analysis. • Finally put a “C” next to the commentary when the writer explains each piece of textual evidence and how they are proof that Jonas possesses the attribute (trait).
Sample Proficient Response • Underline Assertion: • Example: intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom and the ability to see beyond. Jonas possesses at least three of these traits required to be the Receiver: intelligence, courage and the ability to see beyond.
Sample Proficient Response • Check for textual evidence and commentary • In the novel it says, “Jonas was careful with language” (p3). This quote is proof that Jonas was very intelligent. He received good grades and spoke with intelligence. This trait will help Jonas be a receiver because he can learn and understand quickly because he is already smart.
Sample Proficient Response • Check for textual evidence and commentary • In the novel it also says Jonas had, “taken the apple home” (p24). This example from the book demonstrates that Jonas had the courage to go against the community rules if it was needed. This is also proof that Jonas had the “sight” because “the apple changed” (p23), but Asher couldn’t see it. Only Jonas could see the change. Jonas’s courage and ability to see beyond will make him a good receiver because he will be able to face the challenges of physical pain bravely and he will be able to understand what the community can not.
