Introducing Ecology in form five & lower sixth using the example of the Mopane tree. A demonstration lesson presented by DzelaghaBanboye Frederick during the workshop on Developing cross-curricular environment education resources based on Cameroon material and case studies, at the Safari Lodge Bali, today 7th January 2012, using the cooperative learning method. Fellow Brethren, Presentation by Banboye Frederick. PSS Nkwen.07/01/2012
Lesson objectives Identify different environments around us Identify the living things in our immediate environment. Identify the various relationships between organisms in their environment. Bring out at least four uses of trees to other living things. Give a comparison of the surrounding environment and the one shown on the picture. Presentation by Banboye Frederick. PSS Nkwen.07/01/2012
LOOK VERY KEENLY AT THE PICTURE BELOW. THE MOPANE TREE Presentation by Banboye Frederick. PSS Nkwen.07/01/2012
GROUP TASKS1. Name all the visible organisms found on this picture = G. 12. Name any five non-visible organisms in the picture = G 23. State any four environmental conditions found in the picture. = G 34. Write down any three points of ecological relationships between the visible organisms in the picture. =G 45. State any six uses of the above tree to living things. = G5 (4 MINUTES) Presentation by Banboye Frederick. PSS Nkwen.07/01/2012

HARMONIZATION OF RESULTS Students copy harmonized points as notes in their note books. Presentation by Banboye Frederick. PSS Nkwen.07/01/2012
NEXT LESSON (PLAN) Read the article provided on the Mopane tree Write down all the living things mentioned in the passage Draw any five food chains using the above organisms. Draw a food web involving all the organism mentioned above. Group the above organisms under producers, herbivores, consumers & decomposers. Draw a pyramid each of biomass, energy and numbers using only the above organisms. How interesting is the pyramid of numbers above? Assignment: if the above tree were in your backyard, what will you do? (This could equally be given as a test) Presentation by Banboye Frederick. PSS Nkwen.07/01/2012
METHOD OF FIELD STUDIES Visit any forest area with the students to observe if similar situations like that of the Mopane tree can be isolated. Compare with the farmlands, grasslands, river banks, lake, pond, etc Visit any recognized conservation group such as the Kilum mountain forest project. In the field work sites, students should be directed to write a biological essay on the environmental aspects observed, proposing ways on how to ameliorate the degrading conditions observed. Presentation by Banboye Frederick. PSS Nkwen.07/01/2012
