Anatomy in the Dark Ages • Men and Women have the same sexual body • The uterus was just an internal scrotum • The cervix an internal penis • The vagina is an inwardly inverted penile foreskin.
The male body was the “norm” and the female a “variation.” • The fallopian tubes, discovered by Gabriel Fallopius, have no known function.
Menstrual fluid flows directly from the uterus to the breasts, generating breast milk. • The uterus is divided into two halves and consists of 7 cells.
The uterus was poisonous and would wander in the woman’s body causing illness and suffocation. Referred to as hysteria. • For at least two thousand years of European history until the late nineteenth century hysteria referred to a medical condition thought to be particular to women and caused by disturbances of the uterus (from the Greek ὑστέρα "hystera" = uterus).
Female Genitalia • Mons veneris • Labia majora • Labia minora • Clitoral hood • Clitoral glans • Urethral opening • Vaginal opening • Hymen • Perineum • Anus • Breast
Circumcision and Genital MutilationMale Circumcision • Male circumcision is a surgical removal of the foreskin covering of the glands.
In the United States usually is performed on infants before two weeks of age and often without anesthesia.

Female Genital mutilation • Female Genital Mutilation also referred as FGM is the cutting of female genitals. Its estimated that 2 million girls undergo some form of FGM throughout the world each year.
In many countries around the world including Africa and Asia infant girls and women of any age, including in some cases during her pregnancy, usually carried as girl approaches puberty between 9-15 years of age get mutilated.
Menstruation • Menarche(me-NAR-ky)- the first occurrence of menstruation • Average age for a girl to have her first menstruation is 12 yrs. Old. • The purpose of the menstrual cycle is to create conditions in a woman’s body that will allow for conception and pregnancy. • Menstruation comes with a set of symptoms days before the begging of a period also known as Premenstrual Syndrome(PMS).
The Menstrual Cycle • The average menstrual cycle is 28 days long. • The menstrual cycle has 2 cycles • Follicular or proliferative phase: levels of estrogen arise, causing the linings of the uterus to thicken • Luteal or secretory phase: progesterone levels arise and helps prepare the uterine lining for pregnancy. • Conception the occurs if the egg in the upper fallopian tube is fertilized by a sperm cell. • If egg is not fertilized, the ovum moves down the fallopian tube, estrogen and progesterone levels drop and period will begin.
Menstrual problems • Menstruation is not free from health and medical conditions. • Amenorrhea- when a girl has not started her menstrual period by age 16 or the absence of period that was regular. • Dysmenorrhea- painful periods, bad cramps • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding- heavy vaginal bleeding, or unusually long periods • Toxic Shock Syndrome- bacterial infection associated with tampon use.
