Reading OTJs Let’s make them reliable and efficient!
To be consistent, we need to be on the same page • Use assessment evidence that is recommended by the Ministry, and is appropriate for your age group. • Use the Standards document. • Gather examples of students’ work and learning conversations. • Be prepared to accept that you may use some tools for your own formative assessment, but that they are not appropriate for summing up student achievement.
Think about the tools you use to assess reading. Now sort them. Not sure where to put something? Check in Effective Literacy Practice.
Suggested matrix of teacher development – Gathering evidence.
Consider your evidence under the three headings. • What does the norm-referenced data say? • What do your observations say? • What can the students tell you about their learning?
Make your assessment count • If you pass onto the following teacher: • An OTJ, backed up by examples. • Guided reading levels for the students. • A list of the last 5 books/journal stories read. • Then, they can start teaching on the first day of school. Yes, there will be adapting and adjusting of groups along the way.
