ContentManagementSystems • Used by content developers, designers and project managers. • To author learning content as learning objects, practice and assessment items, simulations and other learner interactions. • Store content in a learning object repository. • Offer content management tools (egs. search for learning objects, access rights and version control). • Used to deliver learning content in multiple format (e.g. eLearning, CD-ROM, paper-based materials and performance support). Learning Management System • Used by training managers, instructors and administrators. • To manage course catalog, schedule, student registration, and to capture learner profile data. • Stores data on courses and students. • Provides reports for training results and competency mapping/skill gap analysis. • Supports the launch to eLearning courses. • Shares learner data with ERP system. • Offers ability to create and administer tests. Challenges for libraries • a demand of diverse educational opportunities (study landscape) • an increase in the number of unique environments • need for library resources and services at locations other than main campuses or at distance learning sites/home • demand for equitable services for all students in higher education • technological innovations in the transmittal of information and the delivery of courses. • the appearance and rapid development of the virtual or all-electronic university • what if the students never more set foot in the library? A library: added value to an electronic learning system: collection services (1) Library is a content-rich organisation, but moves from a content owner to a content provider • Publishers become librarians: academic libraries in competition with commercial (digital) information providers? E.g. Find out how competitors work, their offerings and pricing Survey users and assess quality of services Start by asking if patrons would “pay for it” Web sites can be improved (e.g., “my library” sites) Librarians know the curriculum, courses and assignments Exploit resources which are unique to the institution and can be produced within the institution Best is to look for alliances with competitors Some competitor’s resources may strengthen collections Library has to take lead in creating alliances Challenge for consortia Vlir-Workshop: Distant Learning - 17/02/03 - Chris Peeters/KdG
