Health and Wellbeing: Responsibility for All Health and wellbeing isn't a single subject or class. It is organised into six areas: • Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing • Planning for Choices and Changes ( incl career planning and information) • Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport • Food and Health • Substance Misuse • Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (new Guidance published) Health and wellbeing is also about ensuring that pupils are able to make the most of their educational opportunities regardless of their background or financial circumstances and through promotion of attendance at school.
What might this look like in school? Curricular side……………….. • In secondary schools this could include PSE lessons, use of form/tutor time • In primary schools this could be topics planned across all learning; themed days; learning embedded into the curriculum • All schools deliver 2 hours of quality Physical Education • All schools include food education into their curriculum
Benchmarked parts of HWB PSE (Personal and Social Education) This was published on 23rd January 2019 Recommendations are being taken forward by Education Scotland and schools will have resources and guidance shared with them to support PSE Physical Education All schools deliver 2 hours of Quality PE Food Education Support for food education: Education Scotland resources Food for Thought grants
The areas that are benchmarked can be reported on and progress tracked. Schools do this in a variety of ways. However a great deal of the work done in schools that support HWB is not planned into curricular lessons and will not be ‘benchmarked’. • Ethos, vision and values of the school • Daily check ins • Extra curricular clubs • Groups and committees There are many examples from every school of initiatives that support the HWB of the young people for example -
Focus on Mental Health Mental Health Strategy is being drafted by the steering group.We delivered 4 training courses for secondary teachers on Mental Health First Aid in 2018. All 7 secondary schools have groups of trained staff. Some schools have young people trained. Training for the nurturing approach is currently being delivered to staff 4 half day sessions for 19 staff across all stages. They will become Nurture Ambassadors.
Mental Health cont. Seasons for Growth continues to be available to schools to support loss and bereavement. All secondary schools are working with pupils to develop Mental Health Champions and action plans are being developed by these young people. Wallace High School are sector leading in this area. Strategies to support adverse childhood experiences are being developedand restorative approaches are being revisited in our schools.
Poverty Proofing the School Day Cost of the school day toolkit - new updated resource available. Schools and nurseries are taking this on board and continue to raise staff and pupil awareness. Lots of examples of good practice and partnership working are being shared. All learning communities have a member of staff trained to support poverty proofing the school day and have delivered initial awareness training to head teachers. Recent initiatives: • Free access to sanitary provision • Holiday fun clubs • All Stirling secondary schools ensure pupils are trained in CPR by the time they leave (s4) • Bikeshare scheme to support young people to be more active and have access to affordable transport and education
