Common Application – What is it? • One application that can be submitted on-line or in print to over 700 member colleges • It saves time and duplication of effort for students, teachers and counselors • Many schools use the Common Application as their only application • You cannot open your account until August 1st 2019.
Students “Meet & Greet” College Reps • Each fall college admissions reps visit Delran • A calendar of visits is listed in Naviance • Students must sign-up in Naviance for all visits
A prospective student-athlete is someone who is looking to participate in intercollegiate athletics • Prospective student-athletes must access the NCAA “Eligibility Center” at www.eligibilitycenter.org • Complete this at the end of junior year, not before • Students and parents should investigate the web site and understand the qualification requirements • Standardized Test scores need to be sent using code 9999
Special Interests • Art – Visit www.portfolioday.net for information about National Portfolio Day. Talk with your art teacher regarding portfolio requirements • Music/Theater – Check the school's web site about each audition process • Research your college’s requirements and admissions process regarding applications to special programs
Myths about College Admissions • The more extracurricular activities I have the better… • Senior grades don’t count… • If I haven’t heard of a college or university, it can’t be very good… • College Admissions is an exact science… • There’s only one right college for me; my life will be ruined if I don’t get admitted to my first choice school…
How to Alleviate Pressures • Think in terms of “the big picture” • Help your child find his or her own personal strengths and interests • Don’t make every conversation/interaction about school • Help your child realize he/she is not the sum of GPA/Test Scores/Activities
