  5. Junior Timeline • PSAT was taken 10/10/18. Scores are released in Dec. • Analysis of questions/responses • Synchs to Khan for personalized practice • Junior classroom visits will occur during 2nd Quarter. • Standardized Testing • SAT / SAT Subject Tests / ACT • Should be taken in Winter/Spring. • Naviance Exploration • Continue exploring now. • College Visits • Now is the time to start college visits. Begin Applying Early Fall of Senior Year

Visiting Colleges is Essential • Be sure to make campus visits to schools that are being considered • Call colleges or check websites for “Open House” dates • Make appointments for information sessions, campus tours, and interviews • Junior year & early fall of senior year are great times to visit

  8. Important Websites • www.collegeboard.com • Used to register for the SAT & Subject Tests & to send scores. (Language Arts, Math, and Optional Essay). • Free practice with Khan Academy • www.ACTStudent.org • Used to register for the ACT & to send scores. (Language Arts, Math, & Science). • www.fairtest.org • List of over 800 schools that are “test optional”

SAT: Subject Tests • 1-hour tests in particular subject areas • Can take multiple Subject Tests on same day • Required or recommended by highly selective colleges • Check individual college’s admissions requirements • Take at completion of coursework in May or June (Honors or AP recommended) • Cannot take SAT and SAT Subject Test(s) on same day – so plan accordingly

Naviance • Access Naviance through the quick links on the Delran website homepage • Students were introduced to Naviance in 9th grade. • Completing interest surveys, career profiles, and beginning to build their resume. • A tool for managing and organizing your college search and application process. • Contains admissions data for recent Delran graduating classes. • If your student misplaced their username and/or password have them see their counselor.

Common Application – What is it? • One application that can be submitted on-line or in print to over 700 member colleges • It saves time and duplication of effort for students, teachers and counselors • Many schools use the Common Application as their only application • You cannot open your account until August 1st 2019.

  14. Students “Meet & Greet” College Reps • Each fall college admissions reps visit Delran • A calendar of visits is listed in Naviance • Students must sign-up in Naviance for all visits

A prospective student-athlete is someone who is looking to participate in intercollegiate athletics • Prospective student-athletes must access the NCAA “Eligibility Center” at www.eligibilitycenter.org • Complete this at the end of junior year, not before • Students and parents should investigate the web site and understand the qualification requirements • Standardized Test scores need to be sent using code 9999

  16. Special Interests • Art – Visit www.portfolioday.net for information about National Portfolio Day. Talk with your art teacher regarding portfolio requirements • Music/Theater – Check the school's web site about each audition process • Research your college’s requirements and admissions process regarding applications to special programs

Myths about College Admissions • The more extracurricular activities I have the better… • Senior grades don’t count… • If I haven’t heard of a college or university, it can’t be very good… • College Admissions is an exact science… • There’s only one right college for me; my life will be ruined if I don’t get admitted to my first choice school…

  18. How to Alleviate Pressures • Think in terms of “the big picture” • Help your child find his or her own personal strengths and interests • Don’t make every conversation/interaction about school • Help your child realize he/she is not the sum of GPA/Test Scores/Activities
