  2. Risks • Low maternal age has been found to increase the risk of a number of pregnancy complications, primarily preterm delivery and low birth weight. Some reports, but not all, also indicate elevated risks of perinatal and infant mortality in relation to low maternal age. • Pregnancy among young teenagers may be related to biological immaturity. • Teenage pregnancy has many risks: There is a higher mortality rate for infants born to teenagers and there are numerous adverse effects on the social, emotional, and cognitive development of these infants.

  3. Prevention of Pregnancy BTW: I believe the condoms are 98% effective • Teenage pregnancy is a rather frightening reality that can change your life in an instant. The good news is that teenage pregnancy is avoidable: By not having sex, you never risk getting pregnant. • Ways that you can prevent pregnancy is by either protecting yourself or taking birth-control pills but even though you have those options, the best one is just not having sex until the right time.

  4. Rates & Statistics • Of the approximately 950,000 teenage pregnancies that occur each year, more than 3 in 4 are unintended. Over 1/4 of these pregnancies end in abortion. • Despite the declining rates, more than four in ten teen girls still get pregnant at least once before age 20,which translates into nearly 900,000 teen pregnancies per year.

  5. Consequences • When teens give birth, their future prospects become more bleak. They become less likely to complete school and more likely to be single parents. • Their children’s prospects are even worse: they have less supporting and stimulating home environment, poorer health, worse educational outcomes, more behavior problems ,and are more likely to become teen parents themselves.

  6. Peer Pressure/ Influence • Many teenagers can feel left out/behind when their friends start to have boyfriends, or start having sex. • Everyone develops at different rates, both physically and mentally, so don't feel that you should be racing your peers for things like having sex and getting boyfriends. • Many of your peers will regret their choices in time. Others could even be lying. Don't just start having sex because other people are if you aren't ready to do it yourself.
