IWU Snapshot • Private University affiliated with Wesleyan Church • Traditional main campus in Marion, IN • Term based • Adult degree programs offered at: • Fifteen Regional Campuses across IN, OH, KY • Online • Non-term based • Fall 2009 Enrollment - 15,345 • Online enrollment – 45% of total
History of Non-Term Programs at IWU • Began in 1985 • Started with four programs - 2 undergraduate and 2 graduate • Worked with third-party vendor to create and market the programs initially • Curriculum developed and owned by IWU faculty • Accelerated curriculum for most programs
Current State of IWU Non-Term Programs • Associate Degrees – Six programs • Bachelor Degrees – Nine programs • Master Degrees – Eight programs • Professional Degrees – One program • Doctoral Degrees – One program • Certificates – Five UG and Six GR • Majority of programs offered onsite and online
Definitions of Terms • Standard Term – • Semesters, trimesters, and quarters • Usually 14-17 weeks • Non-Standard Term – • Coursework is expected to begin and end within a set period of time • Not semester, trimester, or quarter
Definitions of Terms • Non-Term – • Courses do not begin and end within a set period of time • Courses overlap terms • Self-paced and independent study courses that overlap terms OR • Sequential courses that do not begin and end within a term IWU adult programs fit into the last category.

Characteristics and Benefits of IWU’s Non-Term Programs • Established Calendar • Accelerated courses • Prescribed courses offered in sequence • Calendar given at start of program • Student knows all breaks during duration of program • Student knows anticipated graduation date • Student registered at beginning of program for all sequenced courses
Characteristics and Benefits of IWU’s Non-Term Programs • Convenient/Flexible • Able to start cohorts at any time • Able to provide education “close to home” • Able to provide complete degree programs online • One time registration for all cohort courses • Registration changes processed to meet specific student needs and financial aid situations • Books delivered to classroom or home

Challenges and Issues of Non-Term • Financial Aid • Interpreting, understanding, and enforcing the policies of non-term • Creating processes that maximize FA potential and minimize R2T4’s • Scheduling Out to 24/30 (24 credits, 30 weeks of instruction) • Advisors and Registration Change Counselors trained in the nuances of non-term FA • Communication to students • Leave of Absence policies and procedures
Challenges and Issues of Non-Term • Student Information System • Any system that claimed to be “date driven” really meant it can be date driven with customization!
Challenges and Issues of Non-Term • Enrollment Reporting • IWU uses National Student Clearinghouse • Clearinghouse is set-up for standard terms • Report enrollment weekly for the adult non-term programs • Determining non-term enrolled students for IPEDS as well as internal enrollment reports
Challenges and Issues of Non-Term • Registration • Happens daily • Batch registration is used to register cohorts • Any change to original batch registration is subjected to FA ramifications and must be individually reviewed • Communicating changes to other IWU offices • Maintaining anticipated graduation date throughout registration changes
Challenges and Issues of Non-Term • Grading • Happens daily • Attendance is required and tracked • Academic Standing occurs daily and is done manually • Customized web grading to support date driven classes • Tracking of prerequisites, unsatisfactory grades, incompletes and suspensions are usually discovered after next class has begun
Challenges and Issues of Non-Term • Graduation • Verification of completion done daily • Three graduations a year (usually three ceremonies) • Logistics • Student understanding of conferral dates versus completion date
