  1. Algebra Readiness Chapter 3 Section 6

  2. 3.6: Write Decimals and Fractions as Percents. Writing Decimals as Percents. First write the decimal as a fraction with a denominator of 100. You may need to multiply or divide both the numerator and denominator of the fraction by a power of 10. Then write the fraction as a percent.

  3. Writing Fractions as Percents. If the denominator of the fraction is a divisor of 100, rewrite the fraction with a denominator of 100. If the denominator of the fraction is not a divisor of 100, write the decimal equivalent of the fraction first, then write the decimal as a percent.

  4. 30 24 15 b. 0.3 c. 0.015 a. 0.24 = = = 100 100 1000 24% 1.5 = = = 100 3 30% 1.5% = = 1.5% = 10 30% = 0.24 0.24 0.3 0.30 0.015 0.015 = = = 24% = Example 1 Writing Decimals as Percents Write the decimal as a percent. You can obtain the same results by moving the decimal point 2 places to the right and adding a percent sign. You may need to add zeros.

  5. Now You Try: 1) 0.53 53% 2) 0.7 70% 3) 0.0175 1.75% 4) 0.003 0.3%

  6. Example 2: Writing Fractions as Percents Write the fraction as a percent. a) 9/25 0.36 36% b) 7/50 0.14 14% Divide the numerator by the denominator to get the decimal number. Then move the decimal point 2 places to the right. Divide the numerator by the denominator to get the decimal number. Then move the decimal point 2 places to the right.

  7. Now You Try: 5) ¼ 0.25 25% 6) 7/100 0.07 7% 7) 7/20 0.35 35% 8) 2/5 0.4 40%

  8. Example: Writing Fractions as Percents Write the fraction as a percent. Round to the nearest tenth of a percent if necessary. a) 5/8 0.625 62.5% b) 8/9 0.889 88.9% 5 divided by 8 = 0.625 Now, move the decimal point 2 places to the right. 8 divided by 9 = 0.8888888, so round it to 0.889 Now, move the decimal point 2 places to the right.

  9. Now You Try: 9) 7/8 0.875 87.5% 10) 3/16 0.1875 18.75% 11) 4/7 0.571428 o.5714 57.14% 12) 8/11 0.727272. . . o.7272 72.7%
