LAWS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: 2. Growth proceeds from near to far-(from body trunk outward), scoot entire body, wave arms, grab object with palms, and pick up object with thumb and fingers
LAWS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: • 3. Growth proceeds from the simple to the complex (it builds on earlier learning) sleeping, being fed, holding the bottle, feeding self.
LAWS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: • 4. Growth is continuous (throughout life) and orderly--both legs grow at the same time and rate.
LAWS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: 5.There are critical periods for growth and development. 6.Different areas of development are interrelated. 7.Development is similar for everyone. 8.Development proceeds at an individual rate.
Types of Development • Physical development • Gross motor skills – use of large muscles • Running, jumping, climbing, etc. • Fine motor skills – use of small muscles • Coloring, using fork and knife, etc. • Intellectual development • Cognitive development – mental processes through which we think, learn, and communicate
Emotional development – involves understanding and responding to our surroundings • Smile, cry, laugh, fear, sadness, anger • Social Development – Understanding others and learning how to interact • “Play is a child’s work” • Moral Development – knowing right from wrong
Motor Development Gross and Fine Motor Skills • Skills infant learns through muscle control • Gross skills utilize large muscles for larger motor activities such as moving arms or legs • Fine skills involve more finely turned movements such as finger dexterity.

Fine Motor - Infant • Newborn has very little control. Objects will be involuntarily grasped and dropped without notice. • 6 month old: palmar grasp – uses entire hand to pick up an object • 9 month old: pincer grasp – can grasp small objects using thumb and forefinger
