East Gate is shut Ezekiel 46:12 12 “Now when the prince makes a voluntary burnt offering or voluntary peace offering to the LORD, the gate that faces toward the east shall then be opened for him; and he shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings as he did on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he goes out the gate shall be shut. Ezekiel 44:1,2 1 Then He brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary which faces toward the east, but it was shut. 2 And the LORD said to me, “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter by it, because the LORD God of Israel has entered by it; therefore it shall be shut. When was the gate sealed? • In Jewish tradition, this is the gate through which the Messiah will enter Jerusalem. Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I sealed off the Golden Gate in 1541 to prevent the Messiah's entrance. The Muslims also built a cemetery in front of the gate, in the belief that the precursor to the Messiah, Elijah, would not be able to pass through the Golden Gate and thus the Messiah would not come. This belief was based upon two premises. First, according to Islamic teaching Elijah is a descendant of Aaron which makes him a priest. Secondly, that Jewish priests are not permitted to enter a cemetery. This second premise is not wholly correct because a priest is permitted to enter a cemetery in which primarily non-Jews are buried such as the one outside the Golden Gate. Attempt to enter through the Eastern Gate • On June 7th, 1967 during the Six Day War, the Israeli paratroopers broke through the Lion’s Gate to return the old city of Jerusalem to Jewish control for the first time in 1,897 years. It had been suggested by an Israeli commando that they blow open the sealed East Gate because it would catch the Jordanian defenders off guard. But the leader of the group, an Orthodox Jew, had vehemently protested the idea, stating that "the Eastern Gate can be opened only when the Messiah comes.” By Przemek Boloz, 2011
