The Ensemble Project Semantic Technologies for the Enhancement of Case Based Learning Patrick Carmichael Liverpool John Moores University
About the Project • ESRC-EPSRC Funded: 3 Years 2008-2011 • Six UK Universities, led from LJMU since 2009 • A Research and Development project • Explicitly Interdisciplinary • Rapid Prototyping • Participatory Design and Development
The Project Focus • Exploring new web technologies to support teaching and learning environments in which complexity or contestation or change makes some kind of learning with cases is important. • Also interested in exploring how semantic technologies can support research: data collection, aggregation, analysis (especially collaborative analysis) and dissemination
Semantic Web Technologies Web Services Digital Libraries Structured Data Taxonomies Ontologies Databases Semantic Triplestore SPARQL • Web Applications • Faceted Search • Visualisations • Network Exploration • Annotation
Learning with Cases Global Events, Global Media Exploring the coverage of seismic events in the world's press Combining: Earthquake data (US Geological Survey) Map visualisation (Google) Geospatial name services (Geonames) User generated locality data (Wikipedia) News media (Yahoo RSS Services) Conversion and inferencing (Ensemble)
