What Are American Symbols? • Symbols are things that stand for other things • American Symbols represent values that are important to our country • Some Examples are the American flag, the statue of liberty, the statue of lady justice, and the national anthem
The American flag • The American flag is a symbol of our country • It has 50 stars which represent the 50 states we have now • It has 13 stripes which represent the original 13 colonies
The statue of liberty • The statue of liberty was a gift from france as a sign of friendship • It’s in the new York harbor in new York • It’s the first thing many immigrants see when coming to America • It stands for freedom, hope, and friendship between countries
The statue of lady justice • The statue of lady justice is a famous legal symbol • It is seen at many legal institutions such as courthouses • It is associated with fairness and equity, or being equal
The national anthem • Our national anthem is “the star spangled banner” • It’s a song that stands for the whole country • It was written by Francis scott key
