JP2 College Counseling GOAL To help your student find the school that is the best “fit”
FINISHING THE SEARCH • You and your student have discussed their future plans and your expectations concerning college: • Geographic location/distance from home • Environmental surroundings and weather • Majors and special programs • Size - student population and class size • Cost/availability of scholarships and financial aid • Other factors, such as faith communities and extracurricular programs
FINALIZING THE LIST • Knowing the colleges better • Get on campus! • Official visits with the admissions offices • Preview Days and Overnight visits • Attend a class • Talk to a professor • Talk to current students • List of colleges is narrowed (4-6 colleges is a reasonable number). • In regards to admission likelihood, it is good to have a reach school, possible school and a likely school in your college list.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS • Required Materials • Application • Test scores - requested by student directly from testing agency • Transcripts - requested by student in Family Connection, sent by counselor • Additional materials/actions for holistic review • Essay • Letters of Recommendation • Activities/Extracurriculars List • Student continues to demonstrate interest in schools • Attend representative visit • Register for official campus visit • Correspond with admission representatives • Sign up for off-campus appointment where available

AWAITING THE DECISION • Colleges will notify regular decision applicants of admissions decisions by April 15, 2020 (at the latest) • Finish the senior year strong – all college admissions are conditional on completion of college preparatory curriculum at the level the student was accepted
SELECTING A SCHOOL • Student makes a decision and communicates their decision with the college of choice AS WELL AS the colleges they have declined (and their counselor). • National Reply Date: MAY 1 • Generally a postmark deadline • Be aware of Housing Application and Deposit due dates
ATHLETIC RECRUITMENT • Students who desire to play intercollegiate sports in Division I or Division II must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. • Students who desire to play for NAIA teams must register with the NAIA Clearinghouse. • Students must send his/her test scores directly to the NCAA and NAIA Eligibility Centers • Submit a transcript request on the Family Connection
