Lesson 18 Like Terms – Addition of Like Terms Like terms are terms that have the same variables in the same form or in equivalent forms so that the terms (excluding the numerical coefficients) represent the the same numberregardless of the non-zerovalues assigned to the variables. Ex: xmp pmx mxp pxm xpm Are like terms.
To add like terms, we algebraically add the numerical coefficients. Ex. 18.1 3x + 5 – xy + 2yx – 5x Ex. 18.2 3xy + 2xyz – 10yz – 5yzx Ex. 18.3 4 + 7mxy + 5 + 3yzm – 15 Ex. 18.4 3x – x – y + 5 – 2y – 3x – 10 - 8y Ex. 18.5 -3 + xmy – y - 5 + 8mxy – 3y - 14
