Which of the following best explains the change in guppy size? • Speciation • Convergent evolution • Inbreeding • Natural selection
Body bodybodybodyrockin everywhere! Body System Time!
What you’re going to know after today… • The function of 10 body systems… • How multiple systems work together… • How to perform open heart surgery…well, not quite… If it’s underlined, write it down!
Circulatory System • Function: delivers nutrients to body cells through the blood (delivers O2, removes CO2)
Respiratory System • Function: brings in O2 and breathes out CO2 through the lungs
How do these two systems work together? • Getting oxygen to the body and removing carbon dioxide • Respiratory brings in the oxygen, then circulatory takes it to the cells • Circulatory removes the carbon dioxide from the cells and respiratory breathes it out • Where does the exchange of gases occur? • In the lungs!
Skeletal System • Function: shape and structure to allow movement for the body (bones)
Muscular System • Function: movement of body limbs (skeletal muscle) and food through digestive system (smooth muscle)
How do these two systems work together? • Body Movement – muscles contract/relax to make the bones move in different directions
Nervous System • Function: controls all body functions through the brain and nerves
Immune System • Function: fight infection to keep the body healthy • HIV attacks Immune System T cells • Antibodies fight off infection (like soldiers)
Integumentary System • Function: skin
Digestive System • Function: break down food to absorb nutrients and remove solid waste Small Intestine absorbs most nutrients, then Circulatory System delivers the nutrients
Excretory System • Function: filters blood to remove liquid waste (maintains composition of body fluids)
Endocrine System • Function: glands release hormones
Whiteboard Practice Grab your whiteboards, markers, and erasers
Respiratory System • Which body system would react to the brain signaling an increased amount of carbon dioxide in the blood?
Digestive and Circulatory • What two body systems work together to get nutrients from food to your body cells?
Endocrine System • What body system releases hormones to cause growth spurts?
The skin • If the Integumentary System has been damaged, which part of your body has most likely been damaged?
Nervous, Muscular, Skeletal • When you go to write your answer for this question on the whiteboard, what 3 body systems work together to help you do that?
Which muscle contracted (shortened) to make the arm move up in this picture? BICEPS MUSCLE TRICEPS MUSCLE
Immune System • Which body system would be affected if a large number of T cells were attacked?
Excretory System • Which body system filters the blood to maintain a balance in the body fluids?
Now see if you can do it with no hands… Actually, you can use your hands to complete the worksheet on your own
Ok, now show me what you got! Clear your desks for the Exit Ticket.
Exit Ticket – Body Systems • Which system is responsible for breaking down substances to be absorbed for nutrition and energy? • To catch a football, the brain signals what two body systems respond (NOT the nervous system)? • Hemoglobin carries oxygen to body cells. Which body system contains hemoglobin? • Which system in a fish allows maximum oxygen intake through contact between the fish and its environment? • Which body system is responsible for keeping you healthy?
IPC Time Let’s continue getting to know the Periodic Table
Key Points • Metals are on the left of the stair-step, Non-metals on the right
Key Points • How an element acts is based on valence electrons • Columns: All the elements in a column have the same number of valence electrons, so they act the same • To figure out the number of valence electrons, look at the group (can’t have more than 8, though!)
Whiteboard Practice Get our your whiteboards, markers, and erasers
Whiteboards • How many valence electrons does Calcium have (Ca)? • How many valence electrons does oxygen (O) have? • Which of the following does NOT have the same number of valence electrons as Silicon (Si)? • Carbon (C), lead (Pb), Phosphorous (P), Aluminum (Al) • Elements in the same __________ will act the same. • Name two elements that will react similarly to Copper (Cu).
Who wants to go on a hunt?!?! Scavenger Hunt Time!!!!
Ok, show me what you got! Clear your desks for the Exit Ticket
Exit Ticket – Periodic Table 1. Calcium is a metal/nonmetal? 2. How many valence electrons does Magnesium have? 3. How many valence electrons does Fluorine have? 4. Which of these elements will react similarly to Carbon? (Potassium, Silver, Bromine, Silicon, Gallium) 5. Which of these elements will react similarly to Selenium? (Cesium, Oxygen, Strontium, Chlorine, Argon)
