Emergency Phone Numbers • Campus Emergency: Call University Police Department (UPD) in case of an emergency. • From any university phone: dial 911 or ext. 4444. • From your cell phone: dial (361) 825-4444. Report all accidents to the Instructor
Emergency Phone in Lab • When the red light is flashing and/or the phone is ringing, there may be an emergency announcement. • PLEASE PICK IT UP IMMEDIATELY!
Emergency Equipment • Use emergency equipment only if: • You are trained to use them. • Your own safety is not compromised by using them. • Remember: YOUR OWN SAFETY COMES FIRST.
Eye Wash Station • Flush eyes out for at least 15 minutes. • Keep your eyes open while flushing. • Have yourself checked out at the Health Center. • Incident Report
Emergency Shower • Remove contaminated clothing, if needed. • Flush the affected area for at least 15 minutes. • Have yourself checked out at the Health Center. • Incident report • Emergency shower located in CS-235 and in EN-301
First Aid Kit • Bandages • Gauze • Medical tape • Cold packs • Plastic forceps • NO DRUGS. Sorry!
Fire Safety • Never leave a fire unattended. • Be aware of Bunsen burners emitting invisible flames. • Keep flammable & combustible materials away from a heat source.
Fire Safety • Report all malfunctioned equipment to your Instructor. • Do not use frayed, damaged electrical cords. • Do not overload the circuit with an “electrical octopus.”
Fire Evacuation Procedures • DO NOT RUN! • Exit the building in a calm & orderly manner. • Use the shortest and safest passage to the exit. • Do not use the elevator.
Fire Evacuation Procedures • Alert people and pull the fire alarm on your way out. • Meet your class at the assembly area designated by your Instructor. • Stay at least 100 feet away from the building (or 35 long steps)
Fire Evacuation Procedures • Do not re-enter the building until the “All Clear” has been announced. • Regardless of whether it is a real fire alarm, false alarm, or a fire drill, you are required to follow the same procedures above.
Fire Evacuation Procedures • Helping a person with physical disabilities: • Accompany him/her to an area of rescue assistance located at the stairwell landing. • Call or have someone call UPD & give UPD the location.
Fire Evacuation Procedures • Helping a person with physical disabilities: • UPD will bring him/her down the stairway using an EvacuTrak. • Stay with him/her until UPD arrives unless your life may be in danger. • Do not use the elevator.
Lab Attire • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Upon entering the lab, you are required to wear: • Lab coat • Long pants • Sturdy closed-toe closed-heel shoes Buttoned Lab Coat (Required) Long Pant/Skirt (Required) Closed Toe/Heel Shoes (Required)
Lab Attire • PPE: Hand Protection • Gloves are required while you work with chemical or biological agents in the lab. • Use the gloves provided to you in the lab. They are compatible with agents you work with. • Don’t touch face with gloves • You will be asked to leave if you do not abide by safety protocol.
Lab Attire • PPE: Eye Protection • Goggles are highly recommended while you work with or near chemicals or biohazardous materials. • Goggles on your forehead WILL NOT protect your eyes.
Lab Safety Behavior • NO FOOD, NO GUM • NO DRINK • NO COSMETICS • Never touch, taste, or smell any chemicals • Long hair tied back • No horseplay (pushing, shoving, pranks, etc.)
Hazard Communication • Learn about the chemicals before using them • DO NOT use any chemicals without your Instructor’s supervision or approval. • Do wear all personal protective equipment as required. • When in doubt, ASK.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) • The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) provides information regarding the chemical’s • Physical, chemical, health properties • Safe handling, personal protective equipment required, disposal, storage, etc.
Chemical Disposal • When you are done using the chemicals, safely dispose of them as specifically instructed by your Instructor.
Biohazard Safety • Biohazards include: bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or any human body fluids. • Pathogens: agents that cause disease. • Bloodborne Pathogens: microorganisms that may be transmitted through direct contact with contaminated blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.
Biohazard Safety • Treat all human blood & bodily fluids as if they are infected. • Use personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles as directed when working with or near biohazardous materials. • Avoid touching your face with your gloves.
Biohazardous Material Disposal • Dispose of all biohazardous materials as directed by your instructor. • Do not dispose of them in the regular trash.
Biohazardous Material Disposal Benchtop Biohazard Carton Contaminated Glass Disposal Box Uncontaminated Glass Disposal Box Sharps Container • Only uncontaminated broken glass here • No biohazardous items! • Broken or whole contaminated slides • Plastic transfer pipettes • Cotton swabs • Pipette tips • Note: Do not throw gloves or petri dishes in here; place in larger biohazard trash. • Scalpels • Needles • Razor blades • Never recap needles! • No glass slides! • Broken or whole contaminated test tubes (i.e. bacteria, bodily fluids) • Vacutainer tubes
Biohazardous Material Disposal • Test Tubes • In micro/CLS labs, unbroken, contaminated test tubes are disposed of differently. • All test tubes (solid or liquid) are to be placed in an autoclavable rack (set out by TA) to be autoclaved • Exception to rule: Only if test tube is broken & contaminated, it goes in blood box biohazard container. This is not to be done by students!
Safety Incidences • Get cut with broken glass • Poked with a sharp • Skin exposure to chemical or biological • Steps to Take: • Seek medical assistance if needed. • TA will file an incident report.
Medical Awareness • Pregnant • Allergies (penicillin, latex, etc…) • Epilepsy • Diabetic • Other • Let your TA, Instructor or Lab Coordinator know!
Before Leaving Lab… • Clean your workstation. • Put all tools and equipment back to their proper place. • Remove gloves and other PPE. • Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the lab.
