2019 Camp Recap Cloverbud Camp This year’s Cloverbud Camp was held on Tuesday, June 11 at Meadowbrook in Bascom. Cloverbuds threw it back in time with water activities, STEM activities, crafts, games, and lunch. Thank you to our first year counselors who assisted with Cloverbud Camp! Jr. Camp on Kelleys Island This year, around 85 campers spent a week over several different time periods! Campers enjoyed different time period activities and crafts, dances, swimming, bike riding, and recreation time. Thank you to all the adult staff and counselors who put in many training hours before camp and for their time at camp. The application is online or available at the Extension Office. All applications are due to the Extension Office by July 12, 2019. Scholarships and awards available: • *The Golden Award: Presented at the Grade A Celebration on Sunday, August 25, 2019 to two first or second year 4-H aged members. • * Home Economics Award: Presented to two 4-H Members 16 years of age or older. Members should have significant experience in 4-H Home Economics projects. This award is announced during the king and queen contest on Monday, July 22, 22019 during the fair. • *4-H Advisory Council Scholarships: Presented to two 4-H members who will be incoming college freshman and have significant 4-H and community involvement. Members should exhibit exemplary leadership skills, experience, and potential. The scholarship recipients are announced during the king and queen contest on Monday, July 22, 2019 during the fair. • *Seneca County 4-H Memorial Program Scholarship: Presented to one 4-H member who will be an incoming college freshman and has significant 4-H and community involvement and leadership experience and potential. The scholarship is presented in memory of members of the Seneca County 4-H family who have passed away. An essay of no more than 500 words myst accompany this application explaining the importance of giving back. The scholarship recipient is announced during the king and queen contest on Monday, July 22, 2019 during the fair. • *I Dare You Award: Presented to two 4-H members 16 years of age or older. Members should exhibit exemplary leadership skills. This award is announced during the king and queen contest on Monday, July 22, 2019 during the fair. • All recipients who are applying for any of the above scholarships or awards, should attend the respective event in which the award or scholarship will be announced and given out. This is a surprise, so recipients will NOT be notified ahead of time. • All of the awards and scholarships are awarded once. Therefore, if you have previously won an award or scholarship, you are not eligible for that one again. • Senior 4-H Members • Congratulations to our Senior 4-H members who graduated from high school this year! You should have received information in the mail to turn in to be recognized in the senior booth at the fair in the booth building. Please take a moment to fill out the form, so we can recognize you and all you do! Pictures (4x6) and information need to be turned in to the Extension Office ASAP to be included in the booth. If you do not turn in a picture or information, your name will still be included in the booth. OSU Extension, Seneca County
Cloverbud Graduation This is for any Cloverbud that will be a traditional 4-H member next year. We would like to welcome you to the Cloverbud Graduation Ceremony on Friday, July 25, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. in the Educational Building. You will be recognized and congratulated on your success of being a Cloverbud. You should have received a form in the mail to fill out or there are forms at the Extension Office. Information will need to be turned in to the Extension Office ASAP to be included in the Cloverbud Graduation Ceremony. Only Cloverbuds that we receive information for will be formally called up onto the stage and presented with their certificate and prize at that time. Pre-Fair Judging Dates and Information There are three dates for pre-fair judging. A list of projects and the dates they are judged and a judging schedule are included in this newsletter. If you are unable to attend your scheduled judging date, an advisor must judge your project and you will not be eligible for county or state awards.Judging dates will be July 10th (Sentinel), July 13th (Fairgrounds), and July 20th (Fairgrounds). Judging will be by club again this year. Please check the schedule to check your clubs time slot. If you have any questions on judging times and projects please call the Extension Office. Booth Information If your club would like a booth, please make sure to contact the Extension Office ASAP. Clubs who indicated a booth size on their enrollment forms are already in the count for booths. Booth space is assigned. We ask clubs that have a booth and clubs that have members exhibiting in the county booth to please take a time for booth patrol. The organizational advisor of each club that is displaying a booth should have received a letter in the mail or via email in regards to booth reminders and important information. There will be a sign in and sign out sheet available in the booth building where your club and everyone present will need to sign in when arriving and sign out when finished with your booth patrol assigned time. Booth set-up will take place on Saturday, July 20 from 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 21 from 12:00 -5:00 p.m. Club packets will be available at this time. The booth building will close at 5:45 p.m. and tear down will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28. NOTHING will be released prior to 6:00 p.m. There will also be time to tear down booths on Monday, July 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. • Booth Scavenger Hunt • There will be a scavenger hunt available for clubs and all participating in booth patrol. The club with the most points will win a pizza party for their club, courtesy of the Junior Leadership Club. We hope to see a lot of active participation to enhance booth patrol this year and still make it a fun experience The amount of forms turned in last year was fantastic and we hope you keep it up! • Milkshake Stand and Booth Patrol Schedules • Both schedules are included at the end of the newsletter. If you are splitting a shift with another club, please make sure to contact them to ensure coverage times. • There is an opening in the milkshake stand on Thursday, July 25 from 7:45-10:45 p.m. If your club is interested in taking a shift or picking up an extra, please call the Extension Office. • Farm Bureau T-shirt Information and Dairy Bar • Advisors, do not forget to pick up your livestock exhibitor t-shirts. Please take a moment and send a thank you note from your club to the Farm Bureau for the generous donation. • Pick up times for shirts will be: • Friday, July 19 from 3-5 p.m. • Saturday, July 20 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. • Shirts will be available both days in the dairy bar. • They are also in need of a club/group to fill a shift at the Dairy Bar on Friday, July 26 from 11 am-3 pm. If you are interested in filling the vacancy, please call the Extension Office. • Health is the 4th H • At 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25 in or around the booth building during the fair, we will be doing a program based on health. This program will combine exercise and healthy eating all in one. Come check it out and get a tasty and healthy treat. • Square Dance • The Seneca County Jr. Leadership Club is sponsoring a Square Dance Thursday, July 26 from 7-10 p.m. in the Education Building during the Seneca County Fair. State Fair Rules and Guidelines As judging is just a few short days away and some of you might be representing Seneca County with their 4-H project at the Ohio State Fair, I want to point your attention to the Ohio State Fair judging guidelines and expectations. STEM Fun Day Come out to the Extension Office for some fun and interactive STEM activities on Wednesday, August 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This event has something for everyone, so any 4-H member 8-18 years old is welcome to attend. The registration fee is $15.00. Registration information will be available on our website or at the Extension Office soon. Unwanted Laptops and I-Pods Wanted If you have any old laptops or I-pods laying around your house that you want to get rid of to a new home, the Extension Office will gladly take them. Your old laptops and I-pods will be primarily used for STEM programming. If you have one that you would like to donate, please make sure that all documents, files, programs, and software are removed. Project Judging Dates, Locations, and Projects Judged Below is a list of dates, times, and projects that are judged on the respected days. If you do not see your project listed below, please contact the Extension Office. If you are taking a Self-Determined project and are not sure which day you should attend, please contact the Extension Office. Members should attend the judging date that is assigned to their project. If you are unable to attend your project date, you must have an advisor judge your project and you will not be eligible for county or state fair awards. Please make sure to check the list for when your project is judged. Attending the wrong judging date will also result in members being ineligible for county or state awards. Jr. Leadership News 4-H Kick Off: Jr. Leadership put up a booth at the Family Fun night that was a “whale” of a time. Those in attendance had the opportunity to win goldfish. Substance abuse and Misuse: A couple Jr. Leaders played a part in a video in substance abuse and misuse. We partnered with Firelands Counseling and Recovery Services to create and shoot the footage of the video. Look for it to be coming out soon! Jr. Leadership will be hosting a Career Exploration Day on Sunday, September 22 from 2-5 p.m. at the fairgrounds. If you know of any people or businesses/ cooperations that would like to be a part of this day, please contact the Extension Office. We would like to have as many career opportunities as possible represented. Jr. Leadership is for any 4-H teen 14 years and older. As soon as you turn 14 you can join Jr. Leadership; it does not have to be by January 1st. We welcome any and all new members every month and we would love to have you join us! Jr. Leadership focuses a lot on community service. The Jr. Leadership group goes on teen exchanges with other counties throughout Ohio, helps with project judging and 4-H Awareness in the schools, helps with the annual Tiffin Rotary Auction, hosts Santa’s Workshop, participates at the Family Fest at the Tiffin YMCA and the 4-H Kick Off at the fairgrounds, helps with the milkshake stand and puts on a square dance during the fair, and provides other fun opportunities for teens. Jr. Leadership meets every second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. Come and check us out. Grade A Celebration The Grade A Celebration is an event that OSU Extension and Tiffin and Fostoria Kiwanis put on to congratulate and recognize any Seneca Co. 4-H member who received an A on their project(s) for the year. We also recognize our advisors and volunteers that put forth a lot of time and effort in helping our 4-H clubs and program thrive. Those in attendance will enjoy a meal, presentations, and door prizes. This year’s Grade A Celebration will be held on Sunday, August 25 starting at 5:00 p.m. in the Entertainment Building at the fairgrounds. 4-H members who received an A will be free of charge, Cloverbuds and advisors are also free of charge. Registration information and a flier will be available in the office and on the website in the near future. Grade A Celebration Silent Auction This year, during our Grade A Celebration on Sunday, August 25, we will be having a silent auction. All proceeds from the silent auction will go to benefit the Seneca Co. 4-H Program. We are asking all clubs consider donating something for the silent auction. We will also accept any personal donations. We are now collecting silent auction donations at the Extension Office. Thank you for your contributions! New Volunteers New for 2020! Anyone who would like to apply to be a 4-H volunteer for the 2020 4-H year must turn in a volunteer application to the Extension Office by January 31, 2020 to be considered for the 2020 4-H season. After this deadline, they must wait for the following year. Applications can be found at the Extension Office. Newsletters Very Important Information and Change! Our 4-H newsletters go out to all of our 4-H members and their families and advisors quarterly. These times are: Jan-March, April-June, July-Sept, and Oct-Dec. Starting with the Jan-March 2020 edition, we will be making our newsletters digital/electronic ONLY. Therefore, you can view our newsletters on our website at: www.seneca.osu.edu under the 4-H Youth Development tab and/or via email. There will no longer be newsletters sent out by mail. We will have a few copies in the Extension Office if you need to access one that way. By doing this, we will be saving a lot on paper and postage. Gaga Ball The Seneca County Jr. Leadership and Jr. Fairboard are hosting a gaga ball tournament on Wednesday, July 24 at 5:00 p.m. in front of the Jr. Fair Office. Sign up sheets will be located at the Jr. Fair Office before the fair and during the fair. You may sign up as a team of four or as an individual. Everyone must sign up by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23. Anyone age 8-18 may participate. OSU Extension, Seneca County
State Opportunities • Urban Immersion • Now in its sixth year, the Urban Immersion Project is an Ohio 4-H initiative that combines cross-cultural learning, teamwork and service learning in the urban area of Washington DC. This trip will take place September 19-22, 2019. You don't want to miss out on this opportunity. Teens ages 15-18 may apply for this 4 day service-learning experience. This trip is structured to build skills and abilities to prepare youth for success in a diverse workplace while building cultural understanding of those who are different. The cost of the experience is $170. Application deadline – August 2, 2019. For more information and the application, please visit the website: https://warren.osu.edu/news/4-h-urban-immersion-dc or they are located at the Extension Office. • 4-H Cultural Immersion • The youth 4-H Cultural Immersion Project experience to Puerto Rico will be from November 26 – December 3 2019. • There will be a follow up interview before selecting participants. The experience is for 4-H youth ages 15-18 (as of date of trip). The cost is $400 plus airfare (approx.. $650). Limited scholarship funds are also available. • Youth will be staying in two locations – Castaner – a small mountain town in the center of the island and San Juan - where they will be joining 4-H youth from Puerto Rico for several service/cultural projects. • The application deadline is August 15, 2019 and applications can be found in the Extension Office or check out our Facebook Page: Seneca County 4-H Program. All applicants will have an additional interview before trip final selections. Final Selections will be made on August 25th. • Teen Leadership Council • Applications and more information to be an Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) member are now available online at: go.osu.edu/TLC. Please note applications (and other materials, including letters of recommendation) are due (not postmarked; received!) by Friday, August 9, 2019. • Here are some highlights about the responsibilities of the council: • Age: Individuals must be 14-18 as of January 1 the year of application to apply for council member, committee member, committee chair, and officer. • Number of Meetings/Events: See the program structure outline on the application for specific numbers of meetings and events. Members are required to attend at least 75% of meetings and events. • Working Events: Members are required to work a number of statewide events at the Ohio State Fair, and elsewhere throughout the state (Farm Science Review, Legislative Luncheon, etc.). Each level of membership differs in the number of events that are required. See the program structure for more information. • Location of meetings: Meetings are typically held at the Ohio 4-H Center in Columbus, Ohio, but there are occasionally instances when they are held elsewhere due to events on Ohio State’s Campus. In these instances, meetings may be held at locations close to campus. Refer to the application for the locations for the 2018-2019 year. Members will be notified prior to the location change. • Additional Opportunities: Depending on the level of involvement, council members have the option to apply for additional opportunities including the National 4-H Conference, Ohio 4-H Foundation Board, and other opportunities that may arise. • Health Heroes • Ohio 4-H Healthy Living is expanding the 4-H Health Heroes program by offering trainings at four locations across the state. • The 4-H Health Heroes program is looking for teens in grades 7-12 who are interested in learning about healthy eating, leading an active lifestyle, and other health-related topics. The program provides youth with the opportunity to represent 4-H and promote healthy living in their communities. Additionally, the Health Heroes help accomplish the goals of the National 4-H Healthy Living Mission Mandate, which encourages youth and families to gain optimal physical, social, and emotional well-being. • Trained Health Heroes in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities by serving at the state-level. Junior Fair News from Emily • The 2019 Seneca County Fair is almost here. While we can’t wait to have fun….there is all of the last minute preparations to complete. Here are some items that we are still working on: • T-shirt sale will run through June 30th • Sign ups for the Livestock Scramble, Outhouse Races, Bale Stacking and Cow Patty Throwing are available at the Jr. Fair Office • Skill-a-thon- we are so excited to offer this opportunity on July 18 from 3-8 p.m. All exhibitors are welcome to take all of the species skill-a-thon. • The following departments will also be judging books on July 18 • Swine 5-8 p.m. • Poultry 3-8 p.m. • Goats – 3-8 p.m. • The following departments will be judging books at the fair: • Beef and Dairy • Sheep • Horses • Rabbits will be judged the last weekend in June • Emily will be at pre-fair judging on July 10 (Sentinel) and July 13 (Fairgrounds) to sell tickets, take Livestock Scramble Registrations, Out House Race, Bale Stacking and Cow Patty Throwing registrations and answer any questions you may have. • If you have turned in an application for species royalty, please note your interview time and date. Saturday, July 20, 2019 we will be having a species royalty luncheon. You will receive your packet, crown, and sash at that time. Junior Fairboard will be hosting a “Thank You” center in the youth center Saturday and Sunday of the fair. We will provide the note, postage, examples. You bring your best handwriting and your gratitude. • This year’s Junior Fair Theme- “Boots, Jeans and Ohio Dreams” is a wonderful example of what 4-H, FFA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Farm Bureau represent to many young people and their families. It is a way of life….all week long…every month….every year! Sometimes we face challenges and obstacles that are beyond our control, how we treat others and face those challenges define us as a person at any age. The fair is a culmination of setting a goal, working hard, and completing your project. If you completed judging, brought your project for display, and had some fun….YOU ARE A SUCCESS!
