  3. ANR Extension Priorities • Maintain an adequate number of Extension educator positions required to serve the public with high impact. • Recruit and retain highly skilled extension educators so Extension maintains the capacity to quickly respond to local and national needs.

  4. ANR Extension Priority • Increase Non-competitive Capacity funding for Smith-Lever 3b and 3c and 1890 Extension • Non-competitive USDA Capacity funding is critical for Land Grant Universities to maintain a highly qualified workforce of Extension educators.

Examples of Capacity Payoff Farm Bill Education • Funding in Farm Bill for education • Partnership with FSA • Thousands of meetings • Hundreds of thousands of farmers • Mobilize Extension infrastructure • Analysis, interpretation, impact • Recruitment and logistics • Trusted advisor to educate • Capacity in-place to respond quickly

  6. Examples of Capacity Payoff Next Generation of Extension Professionals • Hire, train and retain highly skilled people • North Central ANR Cropping Systems Academy • Southern Region Onboarding Process • Capacity to show stability in career choice and value its top performers

Examples of Capacity Payoff Water Security • North Central Water Region Water Network • Communication, coordination and collaboration • Supported by Extension Deans and Directors from their base funding • Southern Region Integrated Water Resources Coordinating Committee – SERA 43 • Integrated research-extension regional committee

Examples of Capacity Payoff Water Security • Hypoxia Task Force – LGU MOU • Collaboration across the 12 basin state LGUs • LGU assist agency in their state develop and implement nutrient reduction strategy • Engage and educate agriculture about hypoxia • Unfunded. LGU using capacity funds for the public good

Summary • Competitive funding necessary for discover and develop solutions to emerging issues. • Capacity funding necessary for: • Flexibility to respond to current, critical and local needs • Stability to hire, grow and keep talent • Capability to leverage opportunities of competitive grants and partnerships
