Education Task Force • Goal: Develop strategies that adapt to the changing education and clinical environment • Issues to address: • Complete plans for UME/GME during post-Sandy recovery • Consider structural changes given the Sandy experience and external forces, including size of GME programs • Develop strategy for role of housestaff in inpatient/ambulatory settings
Comparison of percentage of trainees linked to top 25 institutions: PGY1 categorical, primary care, NYUSoM matriculants and graduates Percent of class (%) n=49 n=41 n=165 n=50 n=42 n=163 n=49 n=41 n=161 n=50 n=42 n=160 n=51 n=43 n=157 n=157 Year
Strategies Strategy 1: Attract and retain top talent across UME-GME spectrum Objectives • Standardize and promote “Fast Track” research opportunities • Develop “career-development pathways” for training • Emphasize training through patient-centered outpatient care • Develop core curriculum based on population health, patient safety, quality standards, and inter-professional education • Develop and support faculty teaching
Strategies Strategy 2: Develop GME training model that adapts to changing healthcare landscape Objectives: • Align educational goals with institutional mission • Increase ambulatory training time and opportunities • Teach and assess competencies through patient-centered longitudinal care medical home model • Establish performance and accountability standards linked to competencies for cost effective evidence-based practice and professionalism
Strategies Strategy 3: Innovate and strengthen system for multimodal educational experiences Objectives: • Develop and implement new teaching modalities that will enhance traditional teaching methods (e.g. web-based journal clubs and case-conferences) • Review records and match teaching opportunities to faculty with academic appointments • Centralize the administration of research opportunities for trainees across all divisions (summer research, honors program, MD/PhD, concentration, etc.) • Explore external funding opportunities to support educational programs
Future goals over the next 12 months • Develop trainee recruitment strategies based on career pathway opportunities (e.g., primary care, research, specialty, population) • Address issues of service and academic balance that deter current applicants to the residency program • Begin to leverage education data for innovative curricular initiatives linking UME to GME
