Objectives • To demonstrate how to reproduce LMH process for conducting local needs assessment. • To identify the benefits of conducting local needs assessment. • To share ideas about how to use the local needs assessment data. • Learn at least one new concept or idea.
Community Needs Assessment • Identified as need during 2008 Strategic Planning • Opportunity Statement: An opportunity exists to ensure the link of healthcare services to the true needs of the community beginning with a comprehensive community needs assessment and ending with a data and information report that will be utilized to ensure the fulfillment of the mission of LMH.
Community Needs Assessment • Purpose – • To identify the health status and correlating needs of Cass County in order to: • Align hospital programs and services with needs • Ensure we are fulfilling our mission • Identify opportunities for new service lines • Identify health and social programs necessary to fill gaps • Provide data and information for grant opportunities • Participate in state initiatives and data exchanges • Develop and strengthen community partnerships
Purdue University MPH will be assisting LMH Utilize MAPP: Mobilizing for Action Through Planning and Partnerships process. Community Needs Assessment Survey • Purdue assisted with design • Utilized modified BRFSS Questionnaire • The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the world’s largest, on-going telephone health survey system, tracking health conditions and risk behaviors in the United States yearly since 1984. • Mailed to 5000 random Cass County homes • Inserted into local paper • Distributed through agencies • Approximately 10% survey return rate
Community Needs Assessment Focus Groups • Five were conducted • 2 – general public • 2 – senior health fair • 1 – low income population • 1 – local industry
Community Needs Assessment Focus Group Questions • Asked 5 basic questions • What is the best thing about living in Cass County? • What do people do to stay healthy? • What do you think are the serious health problems in Cass County? Causes? • What are some ways to solve these issues? • Are there any groups in our community not receiving health care? • Other comments.
Secondary Data Summary: Strengths • Lower poverty rate • Less crime • Prevalence of HIV/STD’s lower than state • Centrally located, easy access to major cities
Secondary Data Summary: Concerns • Declining population • Changing demographics • Lower per capita income • Predominantly manufacturing • High percentage of reduced fee/free lunch students • Lower level of educational attainment • Higher rate of uninsured • Lower rate of prenatal care in the first trimester • Higher rates of: • Alzheimer’s Disease • Diabetes • Leukemia • Malignancies/Urinary tract • MVA’s • Influenza and Pneumonia • Asthma burden
