Application Areas • Green Accounting • Green/sustainable building planning • Energy management • Environmentally-friendly manufacturing • Green transportation / routing systems
Green Accounting • Rising demand by lawmakers and regulators for businesses to address threats posed by climate change and environmental issues • 2009: green accounting was the financial & accounting technology of the year • $91 billion to be spent over next 6 years in US • $595 billion global industry through 2015 • Source:http://www.focus.com/articles/human-resources/green-accounting-finance-and-accounting-technology-year/
Key Issues of Green Accounting • What is green accounting? • Not as yet fully defined. • To reduce its carbon footprint, an organization must first measure it. • Organizations will have to report measures to regulators, taxation officials, carbon credit trading organizations, etc. • Who will be affected? • Energy-reliant manufacturers and power-generating utilities • Other business sectors will also be effected: • Retailers, may need green accounting software to calculate carbon ratings for each product on their shelves. • Bsinesses may need to use carbon accounting programs to calculate taxes based on the amount of energy consumed.
Key Issues of Green Accounting • Green accounting information technology areas: • Accounting and ERP (enterprise resource planning) • Software vendors beginning to add more green-oriented features into their products business system products • Carbon unit measurement and management tools • Programs designed to enable companies to trade carbon credits • Software that preps data / interfaces with s climate change regulations • Think Jobs! • http://greeneconomypost.com/tag/carbon-accounting-software
Key Issues of Green Accounting • Business Costs: • Vary depending on your company's size and line of business • Small firms with a relatively modest CO2 impact - costs could be minimal • Many finance and accounting software vendors may simply incorporate green accounting features into upgraded versions of existing products. • Heavy users or producers of energy, or those with large CO2 emissions, will have significant costs: • Specialized software and collection instrumentation that will track • Organize and report vast amounts of carbon data
Enterprise Carbon Accounting • Anticipate greenhouse gas emission (GHG) reporting to triple within next two years • Number of companies utilizing a GHG software product will quadruple • “Enterprise Carbon Accounting: An Analysis of Organizational-Level Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting and a Review of Emerging GHG Software Products” Sources: • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_carbon_accounting • http://www.fastcompany.com/1565844/carbon-accounting-software-market-experiencing-tremendous-growth

Green Manufacturing • Manufacturers under increased pressure to • Proactively manage their energy consumption • Maintain compliance with evolving sustainability requirements • A better understanding of the energy consumption allows manufacturers to better manage: • Production planning and execution • Strategic contracting • Environmental impact • Profit / Loss
Projections for Energy Costs • US Department of Energy's forecast that energy prices will continue to escalate. • California Department of Water Resources predicts the same for water. • Expected price increases predicted by 2030: • 71% for oil - 20% for natural gas • 41% for water - 57% for electricity • Current portion of direct product cost due to energy consumed during the manufacturing: • 24.5% Cement - 20.4 Iron & Steel • 14% Glass - 8.8% Pulp & Paper • 3% - 8% Brewing - 6.7% Metal Finishing • 4.4% Wet Corn Milling - 3.3% Food Manufacturing • 2.7% Fabricated Metal Products Source: http://www.entegreat.com/eg_industrysolutions_MVF_MEMS.htm
Solutions are Starting to Appear • EnteGreat has partnered with GE Fanuc to create a Manufacturing Energy Management Solution that enables manufacturers to: • Reduce production costs • Conserve energy and deliver environmental stewardship • Monitor greenhouse gas emissions • Maintain their carbon footprint inventory • Provide source accountability for carbon cap and trade credits • Integrate manufacturing energy management into a comprehensive operational excellence program • IBM Launches Strategic Carbon Management Consulting (Feb, 2009) - http://www.thegreenitreview.com/2009/02/ibm-launches-strategic-carbon.html
