Preliminary Interview Findings on Lists • Allow for communication with a large, self-selecting group with common interests • Average subscriptions of 3-15 lists • Traffic constitutes from 15 to 90% of inbox volume • Lurking is common (social awareness) • Simplifies inbox sorting
User Goals • Keep up to date about the culture and people’s interests. • Discuss things with people who have similar interests. • Learn about events get people to come to my events. • Help other people, so if I need help people will listen to and help me. • Build community around personal hobbies. • Get information from the “experts” on a certain topic. • Advise others with the ultimate goal of increasing one’s reputation. • Find people who share certain common interests or traits. • Avoid feeling silly/embarrassing myself in front of others.
Project GoalsBased Upon User Interview Findings • Minimize lurking time for new users • Simplify the subscription process • Provide advanced functionality for advanced users, without burdening average users • Make archive system more intuitive and navigable

Lessons Learned • Design for most used features (boolean is cool, but not important) • Get rid of unused and not wanted “features”
