  3. A SHORT HISTORY OF OPEN ACCESS IN TURKEY “X. Internet Conference in Turkey” on December 9-11, 2005 in İstanbul, Bahçeşehir University. It was decided to create a National Open Access policy. 4th Academic Informatics Conference in Denizli on 7-11 February 2006. The Open Access Declaration was prepared. A Board of Open Access and Institutional Archive Advisors was formed. The Board comprised members of the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS), of the Turkish Librarians Association (TKD), of the University and Research Libraries Association (ÜNAK) and of the Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM).   9. TURKISH OPEN ACCESS ARCHIVE PROJECT • ANKOS HAS STARTED THE STUDY OF CREATING A NATIONAL INTER-UNIVERSITIES COMMON ACCESS POINT. THIS PROJECT HAS THE SUPPORT OF MITOS, THE NATIONAL OPEN ACCESS SYSTEM. AS OF MARCH 24, 2012, 31132 FILES WERE LOADED. 9

CURRENT SITUATION OF OPEN ACCESS JOURNALS IN TURKEY According to Ulrich’s Periodical Directory as of May 2010 roughly 70.000 journals are published worldwide of which 425 are published in Turkey. Of this 425 journals 192 are with peer review. Of the 425 journals 308 (73%) are online and 134 (32%) are available on an open access basis. According to the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), which is hosted by the Lund University Libraries, as of April 10, 2012, 195 journals are available on an open access basis in Turkey.The figure of 195 journals include all subjects combined: law, medicine, sciences, education, social sciences, humanities, etc. The number of journals in the field of social sciences is 24. 11

  12. ACCORDING TO A STUDY PUBLISHED IN 2010 IN BILGI DÜNYASI THE NUMBER OF ELECTRONICS JOURNALS PUBLISHED IN TURKEY ARE 253 DISTRIBUTION ACCORDING TO SUBJECTS DISTRIBUTION ACCORDING TO OWNERSHIP 94% OF THE JOURNALS ARE OPEN ACCESS INCLUDING THEIR RETROSPECTIVE ISSUES. 12

  13. MY OWN RESEARCH HAS FOUND OUT 218 ELECTRONIC JOURNALS ONLY IN THE FIELD OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES. 13
