A Sustainable Residential Design Project Project 5 DS 413: Design Studio May 9, 2012
Sustainable Site • 1A: Site is near a residential area. • 1B: Existing trees were considered when planning heating, cooling, and day lighting. • 1C: A solar calculator was used to map out the sun’s movement across the site, for heating and cooling reasons. • 1D: Storm water is collected to water a rain garden. • 1E: The site selected is not usable farm land, available for public park, or a habitat for endangered species.
Water Efficiency • 2A: A storm water harvesting system is installed to collect rain water to be used for household needs. • 2B: Grey water is harvested from showers, laundry and cooking for irrigation. • 2C: Composting toilet to save water, and recycle nutrients, to help irrigate the land on the site. • 2D: Low flow toilet to use less water per flush. • 2E: Ultra low faucets are installed to reduce water use.
Energy and Atmosphere • 3A: Windows were laid out to maximize the amount of sunlight into the home. • 3B: Non-CFC refrigeration is used to reduce ozone depletion. • 3C: Shades are used to block unwanted heat to reduce the use of air-conditioning. • 3D: Environmentally friendly HVAV system. • 3E: Metering equipment was installed to monitor energy use to increase long-term efficiencies.
Materials and Resources • 4A: Fifty percent of all finished materials used came from with-in a 500-mile radius. • 4B: Cotton was used for insulation in the walls, which is a rapidly renewable material. • 4C: Bamboo was used for flooring, which is a rapidly renewable material. • 4D: The carpet is made up of recycled materials. • 4E: The drywall is made up of recycled materials.
Indoor Environmental Quality • 5A: Carbon dioxide monitor was installed. • 5B: Amount of outdoor air ventilated into interior spaces was increased by thirty percent. • 5C: Low emitting VOC adhesives and sealants were used. • 5D: Low VOC emitting paints were used. • 5E: Carpeting is a part of the Green Label Plus program.
Innovation and Design Process • 6A: Ice is produced during the week daytime hours, when no one is home, which conditions the air when the family is home. • 6B: Insulation was increased to keep in heat and cold air for comfort. • 6C: 75% of the roof surface has a solar reflective index of 78. • 6D: The building was oriented to maximize daylight use. • 6E: Solar electric and wind technologies are used for emergency power.
