Sustainable Site 1A: Standard, user-controlled sprinkler irrigation system 1B: No chemical herbicides or insecticides 1C: stones from local quarry 1D:natural pool (Natural pools utilize plants to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the water) 1E: green house
Water efficiency 2A: low flush toilets 2B: low flow shower head 2C: landscape irrigation (plants that require low amounts of water) 2D: faucet aerators 2E: toilet displacement devices
Energy and Atmosphere • 3A: high efficiency washing machine • 3B: energy star dish washer • 3C: energy star compact fluorescent (75% less energy than regular bulbs) • 3D: energy star range • 3E: energy star refrigerator
Materials and Rescources • 4A: bamboo flooring • 4B: green guard approved furniture • 4C: all building material from local manufacturers • 4D: eco-grass (eliminates the need for pesticides/ fertilizers) • 4E: recycled glass countertops
Indoor Environmental Quality • 5A: NO VOC paint on all walls • 5B: energy efficient heat recovery ventilators • 5C: indoor plants to help remove chemicals that harm people • 5D: dehumidifier to reduce moisture inside • 5E: windows in every room to open to let fresh air in (basic but plays a huge factor in air quality)
Innovation and design process I decided to place the front of the house facing the West because in my design layout, natural light during the day isn’t as important as the need for it on the East side of the house. On the East side of the house I have an open concept with the kitchen living and dining room as one huge room where there are windows and sliding doors that will keep the huge room light up almost completely naturally until the sun sets to the West.
