  3. Problem/opportunity (Maize is the main staple food for Kenyans with over 95% of the population depending on it to meet their energy requirements. Despite having many years of training by agricultural extension personell to farmers on the recommended practices on production, there still remains the problem of post harvest storage losses, leading to The Government having to step in and allow importation of maize by private importers. At times The Government is forced to import and store in Government stores to either sell at subsidized prices or even to give it out free of charge as an emergency measure.

  5. Explanation I havechosenthisproblembecause it has a significantbearingonoureconomyontwo fronts A fewpeoplehavedied in thepastafterconsumingmaizecontaminatedwithaflatoxin as a resultofinsufficientdrying.Thisishighlyunacceptabletohaveproductivecitizensdyingduetoavoidablereasons

  6. Explanation 2. Sometimesourmaizeisrejectedbytheneighboring countries duetothe high moisturecontentsatthe time ofsale. Thistaintsthe countries imageandwemayendupbeingunabletosellthemaizeduringperiodsofbumperharvestandalsogiventheeffortswe are makingtoensurehigherproductivity 3. The consumers are at times forcedtoeatthemaizeat a faster rate toavoid it goingbadafterpoorinitial post harvestpractices.This leads to a lotofwastage

The mainobjectives in thestrategy are three,namely 1.To reducethelossesduetothepoor post harvestpractices 2.To increasethemarketvalueofourmaize as well as theacceptabilityofourmaize in the regional market 3.Eliminate thedeathsofourcitizensduetoaflatoxinwhileatthesame time cuttingdownonhealthcostsaccuingfromthesame

There are threeways in whichthiscanbeachievednamely • Come upwith a training programtoeducatethefarmerson post harvestpracticesandtry a achieve as large a coverage as possible • Divide theareainto grids and set upsurveillanceteamstocheckandreportonincidentsofaflatoxin • Educateourtradersontheharmthey are causingthe country whenthesellgrainthatisnotwelldriedtoneighboring countries • Arrangetoput it in legislationandimposeserious fines for thosefoundsellingmaizethatiscontaminated
