Comparing and Ordering Decimals Lesson 1.06
COMPARING DECIMALS • Compare whole numbers • Add zeros as placeholders • Compare the decimal numbers Example: Compare 22.5 and 22.12 use <,> or = 22.5 Line them up so the decimals are 22.12 on top of each other, if you can not drop a straight line through both decimals, they are not lined up correctly Compare the whole numbers 22 = 22 Add zeros as place fillers 22.50 22.12 compare the decimal places 50 > 12 Therefore 22.5 > 22.12
ORDERING DECIMALS • List the numbers in a column, lining up your decimal • Add zeros as place holders • Compare the numbers Example: Order the following least to greatest: 3.84, 4.4, 4.83, 3.8, 4.308 3.84 1. Line up numbers so you can drop a line down 4.4 through your decimals. 4.83 3.8 4.308 2. Add zeros to hold places 3.840 4.400 4.830 3.800 4.308 3. Compare numbers to place in order 3.8, 3.84, 4.308, 4.4, 4.83
ROUNDING DECIMALS • Find the place value position you are rounding too • Look to the right • If the number is 5 or higher, round up and drop the remaining numbers • If the number is 4 or less, leave the number alone and drop the rest of the numbers
EXAMPLE • Round 7.126 to the nearest tenth 7.126 Find the tenths place 7.126 Look to the right Following rounding rules 7.126 rounds to 7.1
