  1. Comparing and Ordering Fractions and Decimals

  2. In life, we see numbers in many different forms. There are percents and fractions for sales, decimals and ratios for sports statistics, etc. We not only need to be able to understand what these numbers mean, but we need to be able to compare numbers, even when they are in different formats.

  3. Example 1: In baseball, a player’s batting average is found by dividing the number of hits by the number of times at bat. It is expressed as a decimal, usually rounded to three decimal places.

  4. Compare and arrange the following players batting averages from least to greatest:

  5. Solution We need to have the averages in the same format so that we can compare them. How can we do this? Convert O’Connor’s and Williams’ data to a decimal.

  6. O’Connor’s batting average: Hits = Times at bat Williams’ batting average: Hits = Times at bat

  7. Compare Sanchez = 0.302 Lebeau = 0.288 O’Connor = 0.290 Willimas = 0.291

  8. Comparing Fractions Example 2: Arrange these fractions from least to greatest using benchmarks. a) b)

  9. Comparing Fractions Con’d c) d)

  10. Compare and Order Fractions Example 3: Order the fractions in each set from least to greatest. a)

  11. Example 3 Con’d b) c)

  12. Fractions and Decimals Example 4: Who ate the most pizza? Who ate the least? All the pizzas and slices are the same size. Cherise ate of a whole pizza. Azar ate 5 slices out of 12. Lei Mei ate 0.333 3… of a pizza.

  13. Example 4 Con’d Convert to decimals:
