What is a triad? • Triads are the fundamental sonority of tonal harmony. • Composed of three notes • Bottom note is the Root. • Middle note is the 3rd. • Top note is 5th. • Example : C,EG is a triad. • C is the root, E is the 3rd, G is the 5th.
Types of Triads • Major-Labeled with a capital M • Minor-Labeled with a lowercase m • Diminished labeled with a small (circle) • Augmented labeled with +
How do you build triads? • Major triad=Major 3rd with minor 3rd stacked on top. CEG would be a major triad. • Minor Triad is minor 3rd with a Major 3rd stacked on top. C , E flat, G is a minor triad. • Augmented Triad two Major thirds C, E,G# is an Augmented triad. • Diminished Triad two minor thirds C,E flat, G flat Diminished triad.
