  6. Vocals • Vocals consist of dialogue and other sounds of the human voice. • Dialogue is invaluable for revealing a character’s ideas, goals, and dreams.

  7. Diegetic Versus Nondiegetic • Diegetic sound: originates from a source within a film’s world • Nondiagetic sound: comes from a source outside that world.

  8. Internal Vs. External • Internal sound occurs whenever we hear what we assume are the thoughts of a character within a scene • External sound comes from a place within the world of the story, and we assume that it is heard by the characters in that world.

  9. Onscreen vs. off-screen • Onscreen, we see • Off-screen, we don’t see

  10. Ambient Sounds • Comes from the background of the setting or environment being filmed, is either recorded during production or added during postproduction.

  11. Sound Effects • Include all sounds artificially created for the sound track that have a definite function in telling the story • Created and recorded, then edited into the film • Can be taken from a library of pre-recorded effects

  12. Foley Sounds • Foley artists use a variety of props and other equipment to simulate everyday sounds, such as, footsteps in the mud, jingling car keys, the rustling of clothing • Foleys are created and recorded in sync with the picture. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNvKhe2npMM

  13. Music • Film music may mirror a film’s central conflict, direct viewers’ attention, establish place and time, suggest what a character feels or an animal is like, cover weak acting, and be used in many other ways. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3mKAKPYh6k

  14. Silence • Possible uses of silence in films include during dreams, to suggest dying or death, or to interrupt the regular rhythm of life’s sounds.
