1. SAE: Agricultural CommunicationsA. Clown. Food Science Hour 5, Marion High School. Introduction: The SAE that I chose is Agricultural Communications. From an early age, I have had an interest in the health science field and my future career choice is to become a nurse. Nurses need to be able to communication with their patients. As a result, this was an easy decision for an SAE. In the fall of 2012, I joined FFA and began helping with the Partner’s in Active Learning Support or PALS. believe this SAE will prepare me well for my future career as a nurse. In September, we introduced the students to FFA and talked about the parts of the emblem and what each part means. The students then made their own emblem that represents them. This activity allowed the other students in the class and the FFA mentors like myself to get to know the students. We also discussed opportunities in FFA. In October, we discussed Halloween safety tips in time for trick or treating to make sure the students had a safe Halloween experience. We also brought in miniature pumpkins and helped the students decorate them to get them into the Halloween spirit. In November, we discussed some of the history of Thanksgiving with the students in the classroom. We then made a craft with the students that they could bring home and use as a napkin holder for Thanksgiving. Overall, I have enjoyed my Agricultural Communications SAE. I believe this experience has been successful and a lot of fun. FFA has given me the opportunity to hone a skill that is important for my career in the health science field: communication. Outside the classroom, I am quite busy with sports and PALS has given me an opportunity to take a leadership role in FFA. I have helped plan and organize the activities so far this year and I hope to continue with this SAE until graduation. Description: In the Fall of 2011, Marion FFA began a Partner’s in Active Learning Support Program or PALS. PALS is a mentor program that allows high school students, like myself, to gain communication skills while teaching fourth graders about the science and business of agriculture. We teach the students not only about the need to set goals but also the importance community service and helping others. I heard about the program last year but I was not in FFA and really didn’t know much about. In September, I joined FFA and was asked to help with the program. On the last Thursday of every month from 2:00-2:30, a few FFA members and myself go to the elementary to make a presentation to the fourth grade students.

Career Cluster Skill Code: • CS.01.01 • CS.01.04 • CS.01.06 Skills that describe what you gained technically: • Plan activities to successfully communicate information to fourth grade students • Instructed students on the importance of community service • Explained the importance of taking a leadership role Contributions to Success: • By meeting with the FFA Advisor, I was able to gather the materials and information necessary to educate the fourth grade students in each month’s PALS activity. This improved my preparation and ability to communicate the information in the short period of time provided. • I discussed the need for community service and explained the activities that FFA does to help Marion and the surrounding communities. This will hopefully lead to more students doing things to improve our community in the future and improve the quality of life of all citizens • I explained to the students the importance of taking a leadership role. I personally took a leadership role by helping to ensure that we were organized for each month’s PALS activities and leading the other students to make sure that we accomplished our goals for the month.
