Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss • National weather service • Basis: Federal Act on Meteorology and Climatology data acquisition and exchange, weather forecasts, warnings, climatological information, research and development • Observations: station networks, ground-based remote sensing (weather radar, lidar, etc), atmospheric soundings, satellite data • NWP used: COSMO consortium developed model (Lokal Modell),COSMO-7 (7 km) operational, COSMO-2 (2.2 km) • Switzerland's representative in ECMWF, Eumetsat, Eumetnet, WMO • National focal point for GCOS (Swiss GCOS Office)

Swiss GCOS Office • Global Climate Observing System GCOS, established in 1992 Co-sponsored by WMO, IOC (UNESCO), UNEP, ICSU GCOS Secretariat at WMO in Geneva = International Coordination • Swiss GCOS Office at MeteoSwiss = National Coordination National GCOS Round Table (every 8-10 months) First complete inventory of:- long-term climatological data series- international data centres in Switzerland- measurements outside Switzerland Progress reports to the UNFCCC about the implementation of GCOS (eg. 15 Sep 2008) Pilot projects with satellite data for climate studies www.gcos.ch
