Turkey is the 17th largest economy of the world, with a GDP of over 736 billion USD in 2010. • Construction sector is the key sector of the Turkish economy as is the case in the world. • The share of the construction sector in GDP reaches nearly 30% together with 200 fields of related activity. • The Turkish construction sector employs approximately 1.5 million people that accounts for approximately 6.5% of the total employment by the end of 2010.
GDP and Construction Sector Growth Rates The Turkish construction sector, which had a rapid growth since 2002, slowed down in 2007 with the detrimental effect of the global economic stagnation and continued to shrink down to 8.1% in 2008. The shrinking in the sector has continued and reached to 16.1% at the end of 2009. In 2010, the Turkish construction sector showed an outstanding upgrowth as compared to thelast three years. The growth rate for 2010 was realized as 17.1%while for the first half of 2011 it was 13.9 %.
