  2. Archy means government. • A monarchy is a government of one person, like a king. • An oligarchy is a government of a few people. • An anarchy is a lawless lack of government.

  3. Bio means life. • Biology is the study of living things. • A biography is a book telling about the life of a person. • A biomorphic sculpture has rounded and curving shapes in it that resemble the forms found in nature.

  4. Auto means self. • In an autograph, you write your own name. • An autocracy is a government like a monarchy where the ruler can make all the decisions himself. • An autobiography is a book you write telling the story of your own life.

  5. Chron means time. • A chronic cold is one that lasts a long time. • Chronological means in time-order from past to present. • To synchronize watches means to set them to the same time.

  6. Dec means ten. • A decade is ten years. • The decimal system is a number system based on tens. • A decimated army has lost ten percent or more of its soldiers.

  8. Advanced Words • Anarchy (ANN-ark-ee) is a noun that contains the stem an, meaning not and the stem archy, meaning government. It is from Latin anarchia, which came from Greek anarchios. Anarchy is leaderless, there is no government. • Chronic is an adjective that means lasting or happening frequently. It came from Latin chronicus which came from Greek chronikos.
